Breast augmentation surgery is an extremely popular procedure, with over 1% (about 1-2 million) of American women having had breast implant surgery during their lifetimes. Women elect to undergo breast augmentation surgery for any number of reasons, including for medical and for purely aesthetic ones.
One of the most popular types of materials used for breast augmentation is the silicone gel breast implant (SGBI). There are essentially two types of SGBI:
a. single lumen: this variety consists of a silicone shell (either textured or smooth) which contains free silicone gel
b. double lumen: the double lumen variety has a saline-filled outer shell and a silicone gel-filled inner shell
Two Locations For Placing An Implant In The Body
Implants can generally be placed in one of two places in the body. The first, called the subglandular implant, involves placing it just in front of (anterior to) the pectoralis muscle. It is the easiest to carry out surgically and may be less likely to rupture down the road.
In the case of the second type - called the subpectoral implant - the implant is placed just behind (posterior to) the pectoralis muscle. This location is more complicated to carry out surgically, and subpectoral implants may be more likely to rupture. However, the subpectoral implant offers some benefits, including a lower incidence of capsular contracture (see below) and a less visible scar.
The Formation Of A Capsule Around The Implant
Regardless of the location of the implant that the doctor and patient elect to go move forward with, in either case it is very likely that a fibrous capsule will form around the implant sometime after surgery. This process is called encapsulation. For some women the capsule is soft and malleable, while for others it is hard and resistant.
All Implants Can Leak Eventually
Over time, almost all implants will eventually leak. In fact, according to a recent comprehensive study of women with silicone breast implants, the average lifespan (before rupturing) of a SGBI is about 16 years.
Intracapsular Rupture In Silicone Breast Implants
There are two main types of rupture or leakages of silicone gel implants: intracapsular rupture and extracapsular rupture.
Intracapsular rupture happens when some or all of the gel leaks past the silicone shell of the implant but stays within the fibrous capture that has formed around it.
By contrast, an extracapsular rupture is when the free silicone gel escapes through the capsule and into the breast tissue. In some cases, the gel may migrate into the lymph nodes as well.
Fortunately, there are no recorded cases or conclusive medical studies indicating that illness or death has ever resulted from leaked silicone gel. Thus, while inconvenient, leakage is not something to be worried about from a medical perspective.
Detection And Treatment After Intracapsular Rupture
How can you tell if your implant has leaked? Most women will notice that one or both implants look deflated or feel different to the touch than they used to. This can be a possible sign of leakage. To confirm whether your implant has leaked, it is best to seek an examination from your doctor. Examinations are usually performed using MRI, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) scanning, or mammography.
If a doctor's examination indicates that one or both of your implants have leaked, your best option for rectifying the situation is to undergo another implant surgery. In such a procedure, the doctor removes the leaked silicone and ruptured shell. And, if the patient desires it, the doctor can also insert a fresh pair of implants.

QUESTION:
Why do you have to be 22 to get silicone breast implants?
I've been reading that you have to be 22 to get silicone implants. I'm 18 and I'm planning on getting implants within the next year or two & i want the silicone ones. Is there anyway that I can get silicone implants even of I'm not 22 like have my mother or something sign something for me?-
ANSWER:
The main reason that women are encouraged to wait until they're in their 20's to get breast implants of any kind (not just silicone) is because your body is not done growing yet. Many young women are still filling out well into their early 20's. If you get implants too early, they could end up having to be re-done if your body changes too much.Wait the extra four years and have them done when you're 22. At your young age, even if your boobs aren't what you want them to be, you're still ahead of any woman in her 30's so try not to sweat it.

QUESTION:
What's the difference between regular silicone and gummy bear silicone breast implants?
if there is any difference. also, is it rare for doctors to do silicone implants on patients younger than 22 if they have parents permission?-
ANSWER:
Hayley has it backwards. Regular Silicone is the older style implant with liquid, that is not approved for cosmetic use. You can only choose that option if you had a mastectomy. The cohesive silicone gel implant is just that, you can cut the implant in half and the silicone will not leak. The have been used in Europe for years, but were just FDA approved in the US in 2006. They were only tested in clinical trials on women 22 and over, so those are the only women that doctors can use them with. Any doctor that does not follow these guidelines is sketchy and doesn't mind risking his license. It's an FDA standard, it has nothing to do with parental permission.

QUESTION:
Has anyone regretted getting silicone breast implants and why?
Thinking about having the surgery but worried about silent ruptures, pain, etc. Hopefully someone in the DFW area can help me decide whether or not to go through with this surgery and find a good doctor as well. I hear the Gummy Bear implants are safest.-
ANSWER:
Plastic surgery should be for fixing superficial things that are grossly abnormal. That being said, unless there is something hideously wrong with your breasts, going through surgery to get breast implants is a huge mistake. Most men prefer natural breasts and 9 times out of 10 breast implants do not look real without clothes and about 50% of the time it is easy to tell even if the girl is wearing clothes.
Besides, what kind of man (or woman) will you attract by being fake? Do you really want that kind of relationship? Not to mention there are plenty of women who regret getting them and eventually have them removed.
I highly suggest against getting them.

QUESTION:
are they planning on changing age restriction for silicone breast implants?
i know its because silicone has only been tested on 22 year olds, but are they considering testing younger like 18? i would think so...anyone know?-
ANSWER:
Breast implants are considered medical devices, and they have to have FDA approval. Since they were only tested on women 22 years and older, that is the only population they were approved for. (you think a doctor would know that). Since they were approved by the FDA in 2006, I am sure they began testing them on women 18 and over. It will be some time though (years) before they are found to be safe. Unfortunately, this is confidential information, and we won't know anything about the studies until they are concluded.

QUESTION:
Are silicone or saline breast implants safer?
I know they both have health risks. Saline implants are coated in silicone I think. And silicone implants have a bad reputation when it comes to safety.-
ANSWER:
the outter shell of both silicone and saline implants are made of silicone. the same silicone is used to make heart valves, catheters, dentistry implants, as a cosmetic filler and many other bodily devices.
true, if saline ruptures, the saline will absorb into your body and you will know that your implant has ruptured.
the newly FDA approved silicone implants rarely show evidence of rupture. my plastic surgeion showed me a silicone implant that he had puntured, when i squeezed it, the silicone squeezed out and when i quit squeezing, it sucked back in. the silicone is not a liquid, it is a cohesive gel. therefor it does not circulate thru your body if it ruptures. In fact, it is recommended that girls with silicone implants get a MRI of their breasts every 2-3 years to check for rupture. However, my plastic surgeon told me that as long as the silicone is really staying inside of the shell, there is no real reason replace the implant.
the long term safety cannot be established since the new silicone implants have only been on the market since 2006. there have been extensive and strenous studies on the new implants as mandated by the FDA.
in general, the long term safety cannot be assured or refuted as there is no long term evidence.

QUESTION:
What is the difference between saline and silicone breast implants?
What are the pros and cons of each. does it really matter? Which kind is "softer" if you were only going to go up to a full B or a small C. ?Just Trying to do a little research for a possible future surgery. Thanks
-
ANSWER:
Some surgeons feel that silicone implants have a more natural look and feel than saline implants because silicone gel has a texture that is similar to breast tissue. Saline implants have some advantages over silicone implants. Silicone implant ruptures are harder to detect. When saline implants rupture, they deflate and the results are seen almost immediately. When silicone implants rupture, the breast often looks and feels the same because the silicone gel may leak into surrounding areas of the breast without a visible difference. Replacing a ruptured silicone gel implant is more difficult than repairing a saline implant. Silicone implants also have a higher rate of capsular contracture and a higher deflation rate.
Saline implants have a silicone rubber shell that is inflated to the desired size with sterile saline. Most implants have a valve that is sealable by the surgeon. There are two types of saline-filled implants. One type is a fixed volume implant, which is filled with the entire volume of saline at implantation. Another type is an adjustable volume implant, which is filled intraoperatively and has the potential for further postoperative adjustment.
Silicone implants have a silicone rubber shell that is filled with a fixed amount of silicone gel. Each implant has a patch that covers the manufacturing port of the implant.
Silicone implants vary in shell surface (smooth/textured), shape, profile, volume, shell thickness, and number of shell lumens. Most silicone gel-filled implants are not adjustable.

what will happen to her breasts would they grow on top of the silicone or...... I dont know tell me what will happen. will the milk still come out her breast?-
ANSWER:
the implants aren't put over the breast, they're actually either above or under the muscle in the chest. i believe you are still able to produce milk, the only concern is the shape of the breasts after you have the child. if you just got the surgery is isn't recommended to get pregnant within 2 yrs. it won't give your new breasts the proper time to heal.

QUESTION:
What are the differences between silicone and saline breast implants?
What are the differences between silicone and saline breast implants?
I thought they are same.-
ANSWER:
Silicone went off the market for a while in the US for safety reasons. If the saline raptures it wont make you sick like the silicone, but with the new implants it's EXTREMELY unlikely they'll rupture so silicone is making a big come back. Silicone is said to feel and move more naturally than salines.

QUESTION:
Is it better to get the new silicone implants or saline breast implants?
Do you recommend getting the implant through the nipple, under the breast or thru the armpit?
Over or under the muscle? Thanks-
ANSWER:
Silicone vs. Saline really depends on you.
Silicone is more realistic looking and recommended with girls whose natural breast size on is on the smaller size. For silicone you're going through the nipple no matter what. For saline you can go through the armpit or underneath the breast (with the armpit being the popular vote because of less obvious scarring) because the actual breast implant isn't filled until it's inside the breast and thus the incision does not need to be so big. Saline is recommended to woman who already have larger breasts because they're safer than silicone and since you already have so much breast tissue, the more natural feeling implant is not needed.
Under the muscle, it's more natural looking and feeling.
Another thing you have to think of with silicone is that since you do have to do through the nipple, you risk loosing feeling in that area as well as the possible loss in the ability to breastfeed future childeren(because milk ducts may be severed.)
One last thing is that if a breast implant is ruptured, it's immediatly obvious with saline, and with silicone you have to get an MRI in order to see the damage, so you could become very sick.So it's really all up to you. You future plans, current breast size, desires, and risks you're willing to take!

QUESTION:
15 year old silicone breast implants i feel real ill most of the time blood test say high sensitivity to ?
my blood test says high sensitivity to silicon and of nickel do i need to have theses implant taken out? will i be able to have them replaced? will this contamination harm me or even kill me ???-
ANSWER:
What kind of test did you have?
Was it a real test at a Doctors office? Or something somebody is using to try to sell you stuff? (There are plenty of those).
But implants can and do cause problems including chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia.
Many people feel far better after having them taken out.
Do you really need such large breasts? Did the auditions for Bay Watch work out? (lol).
But I think 15 years is time to have them changed anyway - they don't last forever. Good luck.

QUESTION:
Can an 18 year old have silicone breast implants or are they only restricted to getting saline breast implants
and how much do breast implants cost???-
ANSWER:
I had an augmentation 5 weeks ago and have silicone implants. The manufacturer is Mentor, and they do not recommend silicone for under 22. I really don't know the reasons why. However, the key to breast augmentation is lots of research. That includes the differences between saline & silicone, as well as the research of various board certified plastic surgeons. My plastic surgeon will place silicone implants in a patient under 22 as long as there is a true understanding and a lot of legal waivers to be signed. I know of 2 patients he did silicone on-was age 19, the other 20.
Please use this website as a patient education resource:
www.justbreastimplants.comI learned so much from that site, and then continued to meet amazing women through the forum message boards. Everyone is kind and non-threatening, always very supportive.
My augmentation was 77, which included the consultation, 1 pre-op & 4 post-op visits.
Good luck, and feel free to email me if you want to chat more about the issue.

Age for silicone breast implants?
Angel Porrino (Holly's World) is only 21 and she got silicone breast implants. How is this possible?
I thought that you HAD to be 22 to get silicone breast implants rather than the saline kind.-
ANSWER:
I'm not sure how it goes as far a with laws, rules and regulations and such. Couldn't it be starting from the age of 21? Rather than having to be above 21? I hardly think she would get 'special treatment' on something that regulated. If you're bent on finding out, try searching for it, or just ask a practice on what the general rules or laws are concerning plastic surgery.Hope this helps!

QUESTION:
Why use silicone for breast implants and not actual real breast tissue?
When woman get breast implants IV wondered why the doctor
Doesn’t just use real breast tissue from somebody else’s breast And implant that instead.-
ANSWER:
Real breast tissue from another person would be like an organ transplant. The body would see it as an invading 'infection' and would try to fight it. The patient would need to take anti-rejection drugs (immunosuppressants) for the rest of his or her life. These drugs have many bad side effects, for instance they usually cause the patient to gain a lot of weight, so you wouldn't use them for 'cosmetic' surgery. Also the drugs are very expensive, like 0-800/month for the rest of the patient's life. Also they compromise the immune system so the patient has to be careful about catching colds and virusses for the rest of her life.So artificial implants are better.

QUESTION:
Which is better/safer? saline or silicone breast implants? - and why?
anyone who has had breast implants - how do you like saline or silicone gel? Are there any specific complications you have had or would you get the procedure done again?-
ANSWER:
If in doubt, go with the saline, the contents are not toxic to your body (saline is actually a solution used in intravenous therapy to replace body fluids). However, over the last few years there have been more exacting and rigid standards imposed on silicone breast implants, so they have become safer. Still, the best is saline, especially since they are much more natural feeling according to friends/patients who have had them.

Why do you need to be at least 22 years old to get silicone breast implants?-
ANSWER:
Because these types of implants were just FDA approved in 2006, and were only tested on women 22 years or older. Who ever they are tested on, is only who they are approved for. Until they conduct clinical trials on women 18-21, and determine they are safe, they cannot get them. Otherwise saline is the only type you can get at 18, or younger with parental permission.Check your facts EROS7776 and Jen H

QUESTION:
Can I get silicone breast implants at 18?
I'm 16 now but I plan to get breast implants to go from a C to DD because my breasts sag severely. I've asked my doctor about the sagging and the only way to remove the extra skin and lift my breasts and give them shape/volume is to have surgery. I thought about just getting a lift but because I had extreme weight loss, I still won't have much definition and shape (I was on steroids for asthma and gained a ton of weight and lost it so now my breasts sag). So instead of going through major scarring for little results, I figured it be better to get smaller lift with implants (less scarring, cheaper and better looking than a lift alone). Anyway I read you have to be 22 to be silicone. Is that right? Are there any exceptions? I don't want to get implants with saline at 18 and recover just have another surgery at 22. I also don't want to go a good majority of my young adult life not being able to wear simple clothing because my breasts have no shape (even push up bras make them look unnatural). I'd be wasting 4 years and I need at least 1 for surgery/recovery. I've been informed by my doctor and information she's given me and been reading about it for over a year and a half now so I know pretty much all the risks and such. Can I get silicone implants at 18 considering my situation of weight loss from steroids? It's not fair or my fault that I gained weight on steroids and my breasts are horrible looking. I already have to deal with stretch marks and other body problems from the weight gain. I shouldn't have to deal with sagging breasts as someone under 30 or 40 years old either.
No, silicone are more natural feeling that saline. I've read from patients and doctors and seen it first hand. My aunts both have implants (1 has silicone and the other saline). The silicone breasts look way better and natural.
There is a law restriction on people under 22 getting silicone. At 16, people have to get saline. Sorry if I sound rude but you said nothing relevant to my question. Why answer if you're saying nothing?-
ANSWER:
Normally I wouldn't support anyone so young getting implants, but you need them because of a medical condition rather than being vain.
I'm having a breast reconstruction after a bilateral mastectomy, and I was terrified of silicone after all the bad press. My surgeon has assured me they are very, very safe now. You are correct that silicone has a more natural look and feel, this is reason enough to opt for silicone over saline.
I'm in Australia and I've not heard of a law restricting the use of silicone implants due to age. Perhaps seek a second opinion from another surgeon, if you are desperate you could seek the opinion of an Australian plastic surgeon and have the surgery here (I have heard first hand horror stories about plastic surgery in Thailand, please don't go there). 4 years is a long time to wait.
Before you get any kind of implant remember that they have a 10 year lifespan so that means lots of surgery over the course of your life.

QUESTION:
What's the age requirement for silicone breast implants in any country?
I'm 17 now and I want to be a breast lift and implants when I'm 18 because my breasts sag badly (I've spoken to my doctors and they agree that my sagging is beyond the norm and the only way to correct it is surgery). So if I'm gonna have a breast lift and get semi-okay results, I figured I should just get implants with it and get an even better look (I've been through a lot so I think I deserve it. LOL). I've seen just breast lifts and they don't really recreate volume which is something I need. My breast bone sticks out and my breasts start after the bone so that's not a pretty sight. My breasts are Cs but they have no form or any thing. They just sag and my nipples point downwards. Considering I have extra skin, my doctor said I could probably go up 2 sizes to a DD very well. I'm tall so a DD isn't going to give me Pam Anderson results. It will be in proportion. However, my doctor told me in the USA, you have to be 22 to get implants. I'm not going to waste time and money getting saline implants just to get silicone ones a few years later so what countries can I get silicone implants at 18 in? I would prefer it to be an English speaking country or European. Don't give something like Thailand or India. Also don't preach to me how I'll be fake or whatever. I'm not shooting for the stars. I just want a decently normal body. I've seen the differences between silicone and saline implants and silicone looks and feels much better. Thanks.-
ANSWER:
18 anywhere in Europe. Do some research on The UK or Ireland to find reputable doctors. However, you will need time to recover, so you might want to make a "vacation" out of it. You will also have to have follow up visits. You might what to consult with a local plastic surgeon for follow up if you don't want to be flying overseas constantly.

QUESTION:
Silicone Breast implants before 22?Deformities?
Do you have to be over 22 to get silicone breast implants? I don't want to get saline. I heard you can sign a wavier or get it "off the label". Some say you have to have a kind of deformity (one breast larger, or sagging) or some problem. My breasts change entire cup sizes with my hormones. They go from 34b to 34c. Could this be something that I could say to get them?
thank you!!-
ANSWER:
Agreed with the above poster. Be happy with what you have. No real guy would care about what you look like or the size of your breasts. It's up to you though on what you want to do...

QUESTION:
Saline or silicone for breast implants?
My mother wants to get breast augmentation. However, she is not sure what kind of implants would be healthiest for her. She wants to get DD implants, but whether or not to use saline or silicone is still underway. Please give only the most educated information that you can offer, or do not answer.-
ANSWER:
Silicone feels and looks more real, saline is better for you if they break. I read an article where a woman went deep sea fishing and a swordfish pierced her breast cutting open the implant causing the silicone to leak into her body it made her horribly sick for years, if it was saline she just would have looked deflated and she would not have gotten sick at all.

QUESTION:
What are the chances of a silicone breast implant busting?
I got silicone breast implants in 2009. I hear that they are practically unbreakable, but with all the horror stories I tend to get paranoid about them busting. Some had said that the present generation of implants are different and it would take a force strong enough to crush your chest to break them. Is this true? If not what would it take to break them?-
ANSWER:
it would take a very very strong force to bust a new silicone implant. i saw an experiment where they shot a baseball at 150 mph at an implant and it did nothing. heres a video that might ease your mind http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIJF9wV3PJg&feature=related
