Silicone Breast Implant

Breast augmentation which may also be called breast enlargement happens to be the fixing of an implant into a breast to let it appear bigger than its original size. The surgical treatment is needed for beauty reasons for both sexes. It can be used for health purposes. There're two various kinds of breast implants accessible for a breast enlargement. The Saline implant also referred to as the salt water bust implant was presented much earlier and has been in use so long as breast augmentation was in practice. The 2nd kind of breast engraft is the silicone bust implant. The silicone bust implant was released into the market sometimes in the Nineteen Eighties and has had controversies since its introduction.

Implant Varieties

The implants used in breast augmentation particularly saline and silicone are available in various shapes and sizes. Each of the size and shape are anticipated to include a unique appearance to the client. The sort of body and the breast size the user possesses will again have an effect on they type of implant to be applied. A certified fellow of plastic surgeon can provide sufficient advice in terms of size and shape of the engraft. Both implants are made of a silicone, rubber-like shell filled with either the silicone or saline in-fill. Apart from the shape and the size, the implants also are available as either being smooth or being contoured. The implant can also be studded. This texture assortment are more of preference and some folks say that they're extra comfortable than the sleek options. Another range available with the silicone kind of implant is the gummy bear. This sort of implant is created in such a way as to not leak even when cut into half. It nonetheless requires medical experiment before use on a patient.

Silicone Contestations

Silicone engrafts for breast enlargement were rejected by the Meals and Medication Authority (FDA) in 1992 amidst claims that the implants led to health issues including connective tissue illnesses plus autoimmune. With this ban, the one accessible breast augmentation solution for Americans was the saline implants. But, other intensive investigations, the FDA couldn't prove any correlation between these health concerns and the silicone implants. Therefore, in 2006, the silicone engrafts were authorised again by the FDA. But, there were various conditions that came with this approval. Individuals who selected the silicone implant were required to carry out magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) three yrs after the engraft was put and every two years after the initial MRI. The MRI is used to verify whether the engraft has snapped. A snapped silicone implant can't be detected from normal observation. The rupture may have antagonistic health implications.

For And Against

After using the two, many individuals favor silicone implants for their breast enlargement surgical procedure since they say it offers a more pure expression and that it is softer than saline implants. In addition they say it's more of a semi-solid ingredient rather than saline that they assert has more of a h2o ballon feel. One other benefit of the silicone implant of the saline engraft is that it is stuffed post implant. The vacant engraft is put at the desired place and the silicone is added into the shell. This means that the cut on the body is small and not really conspicuous. The engraft additionally permits for alteration as the surgeon can either add extra liquid or take away unnecessary liquid from the implant. The saline breast augmentation engrafts comes pre-filled. Saline implants, however have the advantage of being less expensive. Moreover, when ruptured, the saline is absorbed into the body with no medical effects. The rupture also is easily observed with the breast deflating.

What are the chances of a silicone breast implant busting?
I got silicone breast implants in 2009. I hear that they are practically unbreakable, but with all the horror stories I tend to get paranoid about them busting. Depends on the profile, are you talking the high profile, then you are looking at a D to DD, much too big. If it is moderate or low, you might be able to get away with the 400. I was a 32A and got 325cc of silicone at high profile to be a C. If I went any bigger, they probably would look too fake. Now, they look very natural.

How old do you have to be to get silicone breast implants in Canada? I know for saline its 18 but I don't know about silicone. Serious answers without judgement only, Please!

    • ANSWER:
I hope its also 18, having a 15 year old or any child underage getting this type of surgery just to better there appearcnce doesn't look right and they are at very high risk of getting complications. Sorry if this seems judgemental too you but seriously any one underage getting implants is just plain obscene and ridiculous. The only time someone should actually get this surgery done is if they had breast cancer this is an option for them to get a part of there body that was taken away from them medically, other than that stick with natural.

can any medical person how their answer this ?

  14. QUESTION:
Why do you have to be 22 to get silicone breast implants?
I've been reading that you have to be 22 to get silicone implants. I'm 18 and I'm planning on getting implants within the next year or two & i want the silicone ones. Is there anyway that I can get silicone implants even of I'm not 22 like have my mother or something sign something for me?

    • ANSWER:
The main reason that women are encouraged to wait until they're in their 20's to get breast implants of any kind (not just silicone) is because your body is not done growing yet. Many young women are still filling out well into their early 20's. If you get implants too early, they could end up having to be re-done if your body changes too much.

Wait the extra four years and have them done when you're 22. At your young age, even if your boobs aren't what you want them to be, you're still ahead of any woman in her 30's so try not to sweat it.

  15. QUESTION:
What's the difference between regular silicone and gummy bear silicone breast implants?
if there is any difference. also, is it rare for doctors to do silicone implants on patients younger than 22 if they have parents permission?

    • ANSWER:
Hayley has it backwards. Regular Silicone is the older style implant with liquid, that is not approved for cosmetic use. You can only choose that option if you had a mastectomy. The cohesive silicone gel implant is just that, you can cut the implant in half and the silicone will not leak. The have been used in Europe for years, but were just FDA approved in the US in 2006. They were only tested in clinical trials on women 22 and over, so those are the only women that doctors can use them with. Any doctor that does not follow these guidelines is sketchy and doesn't mind risking his license. It's an FDA standard, it has nothing to do with parental permission.

  16. QUESTION:
    Help! Silicone breast implant prices...?
I've been doing a little research about implants and decided to go with silicone... But, i was just wondering if anyone has had silicone implants, pricing, downtime, how you felt after. I'm from indy, but no matter where your from, i'd love some feedback so i can make sure i have all facts straight. Thanks Y! answers!
edit: I am a married woman and have a child (which definitely did not help the matter of my breast size). I'm going for a small C cup and right now i'm a b. This is not something to objectify myself, its something i want personally.

    • ANSWER:
Silicone implant pricing depends on where you live, I live in Utah and the doctors I went to were in the about 5,400-5,900. If you need a lift it will be a lot more. I only took a week off of work but I would sugest taking a little more if you can. I took pain pills for the first two days but only really needed them the first day. I decided not to take them anymore because of how sick they made me feel. The first week was the hardest for me. I slept in a recliner for the first two or three weeks, was very low on energy the first week I had to take a nap after going to the kitchen. Taking a shower was a chore!! Lol but its totaly worth it. I also felt the need to hold them every time I moved lol. I was able to go out to a club the following week though. A great forum that has helped me alot is www.justbreastimplants.com/forum
Hope I helped a little, Good luck if you decide to get them done!

Hello, I am a Utah plastic surgeon, http://www.yorkyates.com, and have some insight for you. In November 2006, silicone implants were released for use in breast augmentation again after being off the market for some time. The FDA restriction requires you to be 22 years of age.

  27. QUESTION:
can a breast with silicone implant be a candidate for mammogram?

    • ANSWER:
      Yes and no.

Yes you can do a mammogram, but no it is not the best choice.

A mammogram uses XRays. The doctor will look for changes in density with tumors. Silicone will block the XRays, thus hiding said tumors, kind of like a man wearing dark clothes standing in the shadows at night.

Go for the MRI instead -- this machine superexcites the water molecules in a pattern and measures the changes in flux as they dance. The MRI is much much better at pickling up the soft tissue changes seen in tumors, and is not fooled by silicone.

Normally, the mammogram is still the preferred study as the MRI costs thousands of dollars as opposed to a few hundred, and for routine screening there is little difference in outcomes.

  28. QUESTION:
Is it better to get the new silicone implants or saline breast implants?
Do you recommend getting the implant through the nipple, under the breast or thru the armpit?
Over or under the muscle? Thanks

    • ANSWER:
Silicone vs. Saline really depends on you.
Silicone is more realistic looking and recommended with girls whose natural breast size on is on the smaller size. For silicone you're going through the nipple no matter what. For saline you can go through the armpit or underneath the breast (with the armpit being the popular vote because of less obvious scarring) because the actual breast implant isn't filled until it's inside the breast and thus the incision does not need to be so big. Saline is recommended to woman who already have larger breasts because they're safer than silicone and since you already have so much breast tissue, the more natural feeling implant is not needed.
Under the muscle, it's more natural looking and feeling.
Another thing you have to think of with silicone is that since you do have to do through the nipple, you risk loosing feeling in that area as well as the possible loss in the ability to breastfeed future childeren(because milk ducts may be severed.)
One last thing is that if a breast implant is ruptured, it's immediatly obvious with saline, and with silicone you have to get an MRI in order to see the damage, so you could become very sick.

So it's really all up to you. You future plans, current breast size, desires, and risks you're willing to take!

  36. QUESTION:
are they planning on changing age restriction for silicone breast implants?
i know its because silicone has only been tested on 22 year olds, but are they considering testing younger like 18? i would think so...anyone know?

    • ANSWER:
Breast implants are considered medical devices, and they have to have FDA approval. Since they were only tested on women 22 years and older, that is the only population they were approved for. (you think a doctor would know that). Since they were approved by the FDA in 2006, I am sure they began testing them on women 18 and over. It will be some time though (years) before they are found to be safe. Unfortunately, this is confidential information, and we won't know anything about the studies until they are concluded.

  37. QUESTION:
What is the difference between saline and silicone breast implants?
What are the pros and cons of each. does it really matter? Which kind is "softer" if you were only going to go up to a full B or a small C. ?

Just Trying to do a little research for a possible future surgery. Thanks

    • ANSWER:
Some surgeons feel that silicone implants have a more natural look and feel than saline implants because silicone gel has a texture that is similar to breast tissue. Saline implants have some advantages over silicone implants. Silicone implant ruptures are harder to detect. When saline implants rupture, they deflate and the results are seen almost immediately. When silicone implants rupture, the breast often looks and feels the same because the silicone gel may leak into surrounding areas of the breast without a visible difference. Replacing a ruptured silicone gel implant is more difficult than repairing a saline implant. Silicone implants also have a higher rate of capsular contracture and a higher deflation rate.
Saline implants have a silicone rubber shell that is inflated to the desired size with sterile saline. Most implants have a valve that is sealable by the surgeon.

There are two types of saline-filled implants. One type is a fixed volume implant, which is filled with the entire volume of saline at implantation. Another type is an adjustable volume implant, which is filled intraoperatively and has the potential for further postoperative adjustment.

Silicone implants have a silicone rubber shell that is filled with a fixed amount of silicone gel. Each implant has a patch that covers the manufacturing port of the implant.

Silicone implants vary in shell surface (smooth/textured), shape, profile, volume, shell thickness, and number of shell lumens. Most silicone gel-filled implants are not adjustable.

  38. QUESTION:
Has anyone regretted getting silicone breast implants and why?
Thinking about having the surgery but worried about silent ruptures, pain, etc. Hopefully someone in the DFW area can help me decide whether or not to go through with this surgery and find a good doctor as well. I hear the Gummy Bear implants are safest.

    • ANSWER:
Plastic surgery should be for fixing superficial things that are grossly abnormal.

That being said, unless there is something hideously wrong with your breasts, going through surgery to get breast implants is a huge mistake. Most men prefer natural breasts and 9 times out of 10 breast implants do not look real without clothes and about 50% of the time it is easy to tell even if the girl is wearing clothes.

Besides, what kind of man (or woman) will you attract by being fake? Do you really want that kind of relationship? Not to mention there are plenty of women who regret getting them and eventually have them removed.

I highly suggest against getting them.

  39. QUESTION:
What are the signs that a silicon breast implant was damaged?
does the shape changes? does it bleed? does it hurt very much or is the pain barable?

    • ANSWER:
There would be a change in shape and volume and most likely discomfort too - this is really unlikely these days though - silicone implants are filled with silicone gel and even if you cut them with a knife the gel stays put and doesn't leak away.
If you're unsure go to your gp and get referred for a scan.

  40. QUESTION:
Can women with silicone breast implants still breastfeed?
And would most babies prefer a milkshake anyway?

  41. QUESTION:
why do you need to be 22 to get silicone breast implants?
you need to be 18 to get saline and 22 to get silicone. Why is this? (why is there a difference for silicone and saline)

    • ANSWER:
cause at 22 your brain is more idk advanced? and you can think clearer

  42. QUESTION:
Can you get silicone breast implants if you have scoliosis and are 18 years old?
or does your scoliosis have to be a certain severity?

  46. QUESTION:
What happens when a women have breast implants silicone and then she's having a baby?
what will happen to her breasts would they grow on top of the silicone or...... I dont know tell me what will happen. will the milk still come out her breast?

    • ANSWER:
the implants aren't put over the breast, they're actually either above or under the muscle in the chest. i believe you are still able to produce milk, the only concern is the shape of the breasts after you have the child. if you just got the surgery is isn't recommended to get pregnant within 2 yrs. it won't give your new breasts the proper time to heal.
      hope this helps!

  47. QUESTION:
Are silicone or saline breast implants safer?
I know they both have health risks. Saline implants are coated in silicone I think. And silicone implants have a bad reputation when it comes to safety.

    • ANSWER:
the outter shell of both silicone and saline implants are made of silicone. the same silicone is used to make heart valves, catheters, dentistry implants, as a cosmetic filler and many other bodily devices.
true, if saline ruptures, the saline will absorb into your body and you will know that your implant has ruptured.
the newly FDA approved silicone implants rarely show evidence of rupture. my plastic surgeion showed me a silicone implant that he had puntured, when i squeezed it, the silicone squeezed out and when i quit squeezing, it sucked back in. the silicone is not a liquid, it is a cohesive gel. therefor it does not circulate thru your body if it ruptures. In fact, it is recommended that girls with silicone implants get a MRI of their breasts every 2-3 years to check for rupture. However, my plastic surgeon told me that as long as the silicone is really staying inside of the shell, there is no real reason replace the implant.
the long term safety cannot be established since the new silicone implants have only been on the market since 2006. there have been extensive and strenous studies on the new implants as mandated by the FDA.
in general, the long term safety cannot be assured or refuted as there is no long term evidence.

  50. QUESTION:
Why use silicone for breast implants and not actual real breast tissue?
When woman get breast implants IV wondered why the doctor
Doesn’t just use real breast tissue from somebody else’s breast And implant that instead.

    • ANSWER:
Real breast tissue from another person would be like an organ transplant. The body would see it as an invading 'infection' and would try to fight it. The patient would need to take anti-rejection drugs (immunosuppressants) for the rest of his or her life. These drugs have many bad side effects, for instance they usually cause the patient to gain a lot of weight, so you wouldn't use them for 'cosmetic' surgery. Also the drugs are very expensive, like 0-800/month for the rest of the patient's life. Also they compromise the immune system so the patient has to be careful about catching colds and virusses for the rest of her life.

      So artificial implants are better.
