Mentoplasty/Chin Augmentation (Implants) / Chin Reduction
Chin augmentation is a popular procedure because it's a relatively easy operation for the patient while producing noticeable changes in the silhouette of the face. This procedure use surgical implants to alter the underlying structure of the lower 3rd of the face providing better balance to the facial structures. Implant material used for chin surgery are safe, it does not cause any toxic or allergic reaction to the body, can be sterilize, it don't cause any soft tissue diseases or malignant transformation and it ca be removed when needed. Augmentation of the chin can also be achieved by manipulation of the jawbone and augmentation utilizing this technique usually provides a more dramatic correction than with the use of prosthetic implants.
Chin surgery, also known as mentoplasty, is a procedure that re-contours the size and shape of the jawbone at the chin area. This is either by enhancement or augmentation with the use of an implant or reduction surgery on the bone. Chin surgery is best combined with nose surgery in order to achieve facial proportion, as the size of the chin may magnify or minimize the perceived size of the nose. Chin surgery helps provide a harmonious balance to your facial features so that you feel better about the way you look. The features of our face may be affected by the size and shape of the bone at the chin area. A small chin bone may project a weak facial profile while a well develop bone with excess chin projection have a more masculine or strong look.
Another form of manipulation of the jawbone is by chin reduction. This is a surgical procedure that re-shapes the contour of the bone at the chin area. The bone height and width is modified to suit the patient's facial profile and to obtain harmony of the facial structures. This is done by shaving portion of the bone with an osteotomy machine. A thorough radiographic evaluation of the patient's facial skeletal structure is needed prior to surgery. This will provide information on the degree of skeletal imbalance and the amount of bone that should be removed in order to achieve facial proportion.
The surgery is performed either under local anesthesia or IV sedation depending on the extent of the procedure. This is usually performed in an outpatient surgical facility that is accredited by local health department. A short incision is created either through the mouth or under the chin. The chin implant is inserted in a pocket that is created under the muscle of the chin and above the bone. Incision is closed with absorbable sutures when incision is created inside the mouth and a non-absorbable suture is use for incision under the chin. . The initial results after the surgery may be obscured by swelling and some bruising. It is helpful to apply cold compress at the chin area for few days immediately after the surgery to reduce the amount of swelling. This is temporary and may resolve after 2 to 4 weeks, but patients are advise, that final outcome will be evident after 4 to 6 months. A pressure dressing or bandage is placed that provides compression to the chin and to hold the implant or bone in place. This will also help reduce discomfort and swelling after surgery. Sutures are usually removed after 7 to 10 days.
Individuals planning to undergo chin augmentation procedure are prepared prior to the scheduled surgery. Patients are advise to avoid the following for 2 to 3 weeks before surgery; smoking, alcoholic beverages, steroids, NSAIDs or pain medications like mefenamic acids and naproxen, herbal tea, herbal medications, Vitamin E, blood thinning medications like aspirin, heparin and coumadin, regulated drugs like valum, prohibited drugs like methamphetamines, diet pills and oral contraceptive pills. This medications and social activity may delay healing, prolong bleeding during surgery and may interact with the medications used during surgery. It is advised that patients discuss this further with their surgeon to minimize possible risk and complications.

Prospective patients planning to have this procedure are required to allot 8 to 10 days. This time will be used for the initial consultation, laboratory, medical clearance, surgery, follow up, suture removal and early recuperation. After this patient is safe to travel since wounds are dry and healed.
Your plastic surgeon and/or staff will explain in detail the risks associated with surgery. You will be asked to sign consent forms to ensure that you fully understand the procedure you will undergo and any risks or potential complications.
The practice of medicine and surgery is not an exact science. Although good results are expected, there is no guarantee. In some situations, it may not be possible to achieve optimal results with a single surgical procedure. Another surgery may be necessary.
The decision to have chin augmentation/reduction is extremely personal and you'll have to decide if the benefits will achieve your goals and if the risks and potential complications are acceptable.
Possible risks and complications:
- Unfavorable scarring
- Bleeding (hematoma)
- Infection
- Poor wound healing
- Anesthesia risks
- Nerve injury with weakness
- Asymmetry
- Numbness or other changes in skin sensation
- Pain, which may persist
- Skin contour irregularities
- Skin discoloration, sensitivity or swelling
- Sutures may spontaneously surface through the skin, become visible or produce irritation that require removal for
- Unsatisfactory results may include asymmetry, unsatisfactory surgical scar location, unacceptable visible deformities at the ends of the incisions (It may be necessary to perform additional surgery to improve your results)
- Possibility of revision surgery

QUESTION:
Cosmetic Surgery. Is it really risky to undergo lip reduction and chin augmentation?
I've read an article from a cosmetic surgery website that undergoing lip reduction could lead to a permanent numbness of the chin area (after undergoing chin augmentation) or numb sensation on the lips right after undergoing lip reduction. Is there anybody out there who went into this kind of procedure and found this out to be true. What is the percentage of having successful from unsuccessful operations- that is the risk of having permanent numbness...-
ANSWER:
ANY surgery is risky and has possible side effects. Just be happy with who you are and how you look. Maybe go to a salon and have a stylist give you a new cut would make you feel better. I just think cosmetic surgery is an unnecessary risk. Remember the movie from several years ago "The First Wives Club"? Well the woman who wrote that book died from having cosmetic surgery!!!!!! Don't risk it!!

QUESTION:
Can a fourteen year old recieve chin augmentation?
She has an open bite which is almost fixed, and is currently wearing elastic rubber bands. As an effect of the open bite, she also has a receding chin. The chin makes her self concious and bothers her. Any similar experiences?-
ANSWER:
Her face and body are still growing. If she got something done now, in a few years it might look really out of place when her face finishes growing and developing. When the overbite is completely corrected, it may make the chin appear less receded and she may not need any correction of her chin.
Check the laws in your country, perhaps phone around to plastic surgeons. You can try asking if they would allow chin augmentation at age 16 with parental permission, but many will make her wait until 18 when her face is finished growing.
She also needs some good sources of confidence....take her to get a makeover, perhaps talking to a counselor could help her to learn to love herself and this could help her wait until the surgeons would consider performing the operation.

QUESTION:
Has anyone had a chin augmentation?
I am thinking of having a nose job with a chin augmentation (I have a very small chin that doesn't look pretty to me). Anybody have any experience witht his?-
ANSWER:
I personally haven't had a chin implant but I have seen a bunch done. I work for a plastic surgeon. I am his surgical assistant. They are a common procedure and 99% of the time look great afterwards. Not a huge difference but in combination with a rhinoplasty they can make a big difference. Just look at Ashlee Simpson. She looks much more feminine and softer. Her doctor did a great job. I think it is a personal decision but I would say go for it if that is what you would really like to do. I am so sick of people esp. women who are constantly ranting about society not accepting us for who we are that is why we feel the need to get plastic surgery. I think to each their own, get it done if you want and don't worry about what other people (esp. women) think. You go girl!

QUESTION:
How risky is a chin augmentation surgery?-
ANSWER:
Very low risk. The risky surgeries are those that involve getting inside body cavities, like the belly, chest or cranium.
Chin augmentation is a very superficial procedure that can even be done under local anesthesia. It takes my surgeon about 15 minutes to do it. (We usually do it as part of more extensive facial procedures.)

QUESTION:
What is the cost of Chin Augmentation Cosmetic Surgery ?-
ANSWER:
Many patients travel from United States of America and UK to get low cost of Chin Augmentation Cosmetic surgery in India. One of the most frequently asked questions when considering Chin Augmentation Cosmetic surgery is "how much?" and “what is the price of surgery in India?”Oftentimes, patients choose their surgeon on the basis of price.
The cost of Chin Augmentation Cosmetic surgery is very affordable in India and costs are much lower when compared to the United States, UK and other countries. However, since the success of your surgery is largely dependent on your choice of surgeon, cost should not be your main consideration for your decision to undergo Chin Augmentation Cosmetic surgery in India.I checked out the website of Forerunners Healthcare –which is the premier most medical tourism company in India offering low cost surgery in India to International Patients. They have served more than 400 International patients from across the globe (specially US and UK) to get low cost affordable surgery in India at the best Hospitals and Medical Institutions. And the general price of the Chin Augmentation Cosmetic surgery is as follows-
The Cost of Chin Augmentation Cosmeticsurgery in India is $ 1,650..
http://www.forerunnershealthcare.com
In India, any licensed medical doctor can perform Chin Augmentation Cosmetic surgery. To avoid unsatisfactory results, it is best to choose a surgeon who has completed an accredited residency-training program in Chin Augmentation Cosmetic surgery. He should have extensive experience in the procedure you will undergo. That’s when Forerunners Healthcare come into picture-helping you get the best surgeon for your surgery at the most affordable prices in the best Hospitals of India.
Your surgeon's skill can make all the difference between a good and an average result. Thus, although it is understandable that price is one of the considerations in your choice of surgeon, it is important to remember that the main consideration should be your surgeon's professional qualifications and experience.
Besides that you should look into other issues related to traveling abroad, which is your visa, passport, climate, cultural issues and language barrier. Although language is not a problem in India –as most of the people are well verse in English. But you should make sure that you have a reliable hand holding person to guide you through the various steps of getting medical treatment and surgery in India.
Hope this helps.

QUESTION:
Should I have a chin augmentation? Picture included?
I would like to have a chin augmentation, as I think it will improve my face shape especially from profile.
Money is not a concern to me, my concerns are the risks associated with it, but in what I've read so far, there are no complications in a chin augmentation. Here is a picture of my face in profile view :
http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/5504/chinetc.jpgAs you can see my nose is quite long, this is another reason I think a chin augmentation will look better on my face. My bottom lip is also quite big, a stronger chin would make it look better.
So would it be worth it to have an augmentation, even if it's minor, considering the risks?
Thanks a lot

I just feel so down and even if that does get fixed I will soon find something else.
Chin augmentation is where they put a implant in your chin so it doesnt look weak-
ANSWER:
if you really want to have it done then do it. But be prepared. mairdo51 is right. If you have low self esteem, then you will find something else that you don't like. Anyway, most people that are preety from the front (which you are) do not have nice profiles. Example: I don't know if you think Angelina jolie is preety but I do. You wouldn't know that by her profile though. She looks like a pug from the side.Instead of thinking "My chin gives me an ugly profile" think "I don't particularly like my profile" Don't narrow it down so much. Don't focus on just one of your features, because then after that ones fixed you'll look at something else.
Like yourself before you try to fix yourself.

QUESTION:
would a chin augmentation reduce the appearance of a "double chin"?
i don't have a huge double chin, just a small area that slopes below my chin-
ANSWER:
Hey, I think you should learn to love yourself... don't feel pressured by what's out there telling you what is and what ISN'T attractive. I am sure you look fine. It's the quirky parts of everyone that are attractive not the perfection. Wouldn't it be boring if we all had "perfect" ( I say perfect like that because it's a bunch of BS that there even is such a word to describe appearance) faces like Angelina Jolie??? I think so! Embrace your double bump on your chin. Who knows in the near future double chins may be in instead of double D boobs! Just like in the way far past... being a blimp and being very plumpy was the attractive figure for a female. All I can say is I feel the pressure too. But I am going to choose to love myself instead of going under the knife. If you want to go ahead though, I am sure they can do something to make you like it more! Good luck, and love yourself! I looked back at what I wrote and you said you didn't have a double chin, just a little imperfection, so either way though, I'm sure you look fine!

QUESTION:
A 22 year old male considering a chin augmentation. Should I do it?
I'm a 22 year old male thats tall and thin (6'3, 153 pounds). I think im an attractive person, but theres something holding me back that makes me feel only a decent-looking percent most the time. I have a small chin, or receding chinline whatever you may call it, and it makes me very insecure. I know that I have a nice looking face and good facial features, until i get around to my side view, which I dont think so highly of. It even makes my nose look longer than it really is due to the lack of chin size. I want to consider undergoing a chin augmentation to make it bigger and improve my looks even more, but confused as to if i should do it and if so, how much it would probably cost me. Any help or advice on this?-
ANSWER:
Todays it's your chin.
Tomorrow, it will be something else. Then there will be another & another & another. Once you get something improved. That's how Heidi Montag got her start. Before you know it, she's having 10 surgeries done in one day.I know. I got one thing done and I want another after that. What's holding me back? I've seen Dr. 90210, where people go to Brazil for cheap and fast surgeries and they end up back in Beverly Hills to get them corrected. They all started with just ONLY one.
We all have insecurities, but what you need to focus on is your confidence and your positive attitude. Rock with what you've got!

QUESTION:
would a chin augmentation be less then liposuction under the chin?
??-
ANSWER:
Liposuction surgery is very safe nowadays. My cousin got her breast reduction, tummy tuck and facelift surgery in India by the company called Tour2india4health Consultants .The Price for the surgery she paid in India was very less. She paid 30% of the cost she was quoted in America.Tour2india4health Consultants is very famous in India. They arrange cosmetic and plastic surgery for foreigners in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low price, as the breast reduction, tummy tuck, facelift and other cosmetic surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

QUESTION:
mentoplasty (chin implant or chin augmentation)?
Well my lower jaw is Noticabley retruded and i would like to get a mentoplasty to correct my face. I was just wondering..What age requirement is there? (I'm 16)
What is the average expense
How long is recovery time/ how long will my chin be swollen for?
Would it be better to have my jaw snapped and moved forward altogether, or is the implant better.I did some research and i'm pretty convincd on the implant (snapping of jaw sounds a bit to painful for me) but i'd like to hear from someone who has gone through the surgery or is very knowledgable on the subject.
:Sorry wasn't quiet sure were to put this question under:
-
ANSWER:
I can't answer on the implant part, but I can tell you a little about moving the jaw altogether, if you're still considering that.I had the opposite situation from you (too much chin!) and had my upper and lower jaws moved backward four years ago when I was fifteen. They saw through your jaws and realign them with screws and plates, and it's a really rough recovery, but totally worth it in the end. All I have to show of it is some numbness in my lower face and some scars on the inside of my mouth. And as a bonus, I look like a cyborg in my head x-rays!
The best thing would be for you to meet with a plastic surgeon or an oral surgeon to discuss your options. Everyone's situation is different and some people need both jaw surgery -and- a chin implant for everything to look right. Some people only need one. It all depends on your anatomy. Either way, discuss your options with a doctor. They know best!
Good luck!

QUESTION:
What happens to the bone site where bone is taken for bone augmentation?
I have read here that if bone augmentation is required for dental implant it is better to get from the patient's own bone - chin or lower jaw as there is no rejection. What happens then to the site where it was taken? does it grow again to gain the original that was taken (even for
older patients)? Also how big usually is taken for sinus lift/bone augmentation on the upper jaw both sides-and is it safe if this is done
in the dental surgery and using local anaesthesia as general will have
more complications? Thank you.-

I got an implant and they used cow bone, and it was fine.

QUESTION:
Is it alright if male now a days enhance their look through surgery?
If females could augment their physical appearance through laser surgery, plastic surgery and others why not the male of today, who happen to have skin imperfections, ugly scars and other skin and physical flaws. 20-30 years ago this is considered a taboo that men go to saloons and styling their hair, or to doctors talking about repairing their nose or chin augmentation technics. What made it change all of these? Now men likes to have flawless skin just like women. Is this normal or natural for men to feel these way? But these men are not gays or homosexual who like to feel confident, these are men who are heterosexual who loves women and made love to them.-
ANSWER:
Surgery is surgery. If it's something simple, like having a wart or a mole removed and it makes you feel good, why not. But things like chin augmentations are quite a big deal. Why subject yourself to that when you don't have to.As far as the styling salons and men with flawless skin - my personal opinion is that men are just buying into the whole superficial appearances are what's important thing that was sold to women years and years ago. It's just a way to get you to spend your money on stuff you don't really need. It's called "product" for a reason. Resist, brother, resist.

QUESTION:
If your teenage son or daughter wanted to get plastic surgery, would you approve and/or pay for it?
Such as a nose job or chin augmentation. Lets assume that the teen was otherwise attractive, was mentally stable and was serious about this.
I'm glad that people are answering but please explain why you said yes or no
I'm not talking about a girl that wants to look like a celebrity. I mean someone with an actual disfigurement (large chin/nose) that was seriously affecting self esteem and productivity.-
ANSWER:
if it was a real, actual issue ( like huge ears sticking out or a really big messed up nose) then yes, i would support it and i would pay for it. Its kinda my fault they had it since I gave them my genes lol.
If it was just to get a boob job or even a nose job but it wasnt that big of an issue ( like maybe their nose was little big but nothing bad) then no I would not pay for it or even support them having it.
Plastic surgery is real surgery with real dangers, no matter how routine the surgery might be.
Some teens think they have some huge life altering disfigurement when in actuality they really dont. I would consult a few drs and see what they said. I dont blindly trust plastic surgeons. Many of them push unnecessary surgeries just to make a buck. But if I thought they might benefit from it then I would pay for it

QUESTION:
Anyone had a chin implant removed a short while after having it placed?
About two wks ago I had a rhinoplasty and chin augmentation. I love my nose, love my profile, HATE the appearance of my chin from the frontal view. The labiomental crease is deepened and to me it appears uneven. It appears uneven not because it was placed incorrectly, but because my chin was already slighty longer on one side(I think, from looking at old pictures) and the added bulkiness accentuates it making it more noticable and drawing it to my attention. My family says I look great and friends say they can't even tell I had work done. HOWEVER, I am sooo stressed out about my chin. I want it out. I talked to my doc and he said I should wait 6wks post op before he does anything. I'm only 26, and the implant is very small, so he does not think I need to worry about the skin being stretched, scar tissue, etc. The implant was placed through an external incision under my chin, and it is of the silastic type, secured with sutures.Ok, on to my questions. Has anyone had a similar experience to mine? And if so, what was the final outcome when it was removed? Did you go back to the way you were before? Did your chin look funny? I have researched online and found horror stories but for most of them they had the implant for a long time before removing it. I will have only had mine 6-8wks and I am 26 and in shape.
Any input would be greatly appreciate as I am going to be stressing out about this for the next 3.5 wks.

QUESTION:
How to make chin more prominent?
I'm 17. I have a small chin. I want to make it more prominent because my nose is huge and my chin makes that look worse! http://galleryofcosmeticsurgery.com/skin/default/images/chincheeks.jpg this is the best picture i could find that represents my chin. it's the first picture. I want to make my chin more like the second picture. It seems like my neck kind of stretches towards the end of my chin. Is there any way to fix this other than chin augmentation? Maybe any specific exercises?-
ANSWER:
the best way to accent a weak chin is to wear shirts with a collar on them. aka a polo or a dress shirt.aside from that you can have plastic surgery. i'd stick with the dress shirts though.

QUESTION:
How Much Does Chin Reduction Surgery Cost?
I have a long chin and it really takes away from my appearance. I have wide cheekbones and a wide face, and this long chin makes everything look mongled and weird. I want to take an inch off with plastic surgery, but when I search online.. all I can find on chin surgery is CHIN AUGMENTATION (making the chin bigger). And please don't respond if you're gonna say "you don't need it", etc., because I'm getting it no matter what. So, thanks so much. I really look forward to getting this done!-
ANSWER:
Chin bone plastic surgery: This surgery needs the highest technical requirements with the widest application. However, it has the more expensive price, among 5000-6000 U.S. dollars. This operation has a natural effect, so this is comparably recommending method of plastic surgery in South Korea.

QUESTION:
Rhinoplasty & chin implant UNDER £3000?
So I have £2000 saved up and could probably gather £1000 at most if I tried really hard.
I did want cosmetic surgery in the UK but after some research I think it will be too expensive so I am now interested (but very cautious) about surgery abroad.I am looking for surgeons in Europe, preferably Poland.
If anyone has any previous experiences with any surgeons with similar procedures amongst this price range, I would truly appreciate a reply.MINOR RHINOPLASTY - needs slightly straightening as it curved a little bit from a previous breakage
CHIN AUGMENTATION - I need a small chin implant to help proportion my face
Both procedures under one anaesthetic seems like the best thing.IS THERE ANY QUALITY SURGEONS IN THIS PRICE RANGE???
Thank you!-
ANSWER:
You can get the best answers if you go to this excellent informative site: RealSelf.com. You can ask questions online (it's best to be detailed and very specific). It's free. Many international board certified medical experts - doctors, top notch plastic surgeons, etc. who participate voluntarily (no payments are made, so it's unbiased) will respond online with full information, cost details, etc. You can also have direct contact with those who respond.Site is also used by many hundreds who have undergone a wide range of cosmetic treatments and plastic surgery, and rhinoplasty, etc. Many share online their assessments of the treatments and costs, good and bad (and sometimes nightmarish) and some submit before and after photos.
You will learn how to find the best surgeon and how best to interview prospective ones. Many apparently fail to make absolutely clear what they want and then are unhappy with results.Mukunda
