Breast Reduction

Surgery has offered the opportunity to get back to feeling good, both mentally and physically. If the body’s appearance or state is not in alignment with the mental and emotional wellbeing of a patient, surgery may be an option which can alleviate that disjunction. Breast surgery is a medical field which offers the opportunity to align the physical body and the mental so that patients can feel confident and comfortable with how they appear and feel, from the inside out.

For many woman, breast reduction has become an option to help bring the physical body into alignment with the mental and emotional wellbeing that is necessary to live joyfully and comfortably. Symptoms associated with overly developed breasts can include physical pain associated with back, neck, shoulder pain as well as overall achiness in the chest, and lower back. Exercising can also become difficult and running or jogging can be hard to do. Overall, the hindrances can outnumber any benefits and having a healthy and comfortable body structure can facilitate a happier and more carefree life. Breast reduction surgery offers this opportunity.

As with any surgical procedure, there are benefits and risks involved. Discussing these with a breast surgeon so that you can feel 100% satisfied about the procedure both before and after is important to the healing process. Keep in mind that every body is unique and the breast surgeon may make suggestions for treatment and discuss how the body will be altered and how the surgery will change the body. It is always a good idea to discuss your goals, the reasons for having the surgery, and to keep realistic expectations so that you can be fully satisfied with the results of the surgery. Furthermore, speaking to more than one breast surgeon to get various opinions about the type of surgery and techniques used is an option. Doing research on the surgery, how it can be performed, popular and successful techniques, as well as important things to keep in mind are important.

By knowing what you hope to accomplish through breast reduction surgery, you can stay mentally and emotionally focused on your goals so that you are prepared for whatever change in your body may occur after surgery. Since breast reduction surgery is one of the more elaborate and complex types of breast surgery, it is very important to familiarize yourself with the entire process, what the healing process involves, how your lifestyle will change during and after healing, and what you personally must do to prepare for those changes. Since most patients have successful breast reduction experiences, it is important to remain optimistic and positive. Likewise, there are risks that must be addressed and discussed with a professional so that post-surgery, during healing, you are in the best possible position to both take care of your own health and to also receive the medical treatment necessary should anything occur that requires further care.

For everyone, surgery is a personal decision and it is also a personal process which requires that you take your own health and wellbeing in to your own hands. For optimum results, it is vital to explore your options, remain positive, and reasonable, always striving to gain a full understanding of the procedures out there so that your medical care is fully in alignment with your expectations and goals.

  1. QUESTION:
    breast reduction?
For those who have undergone breast reduction surgery, can you please tell me what kind of scars you are left with. even I m planning to

    • ANSWER:
Why breast reduction? Is this the only fat problem you have?
If it were my breasts I would not consider it nor an increase?
There are other ways to decrease the size of boobs.

  2. QUESTION:
    Breast reduction?
I'm 19 and want a breast reduction more than anything. How much would that cost, what are the drawbacks and negative points, and is there any way to get the insurance company to pay for it?

    • ANSWER:
I can sympathize with you. A reduction cost somewhere in the neighborhood of 5000-10000 depending on location. The drawbacks would be the recovery time, and sometimes women cannot breast feed after surgery. Insurance will cover the procedure if the size of the breast is the cause of other health or medical problems. Hope this helps.

  3. QUESTION:
    Breast Reduction?
I am planning on getting a Breast Reduction and i went to see the Plastic Surgeon, does anyone know how long it usually takes the insurance company to tell you if they are approved it or not?

    • ANSWER:
      Four weeks.

After two weeks, call to ensure they have the documentation.

Two weeks later, call to see if there is a decision.

Please see at least THREE plastic surgeons before you choose. I ended up going with my second surgeon that I had a consult with.

Also check out this site, it helped me out a LOT with my reduction.

Regarding battlecry's answer below, check out http://www.bfar.org if you haven't already. There are plenty of women who can breastfeed after reduction. When they operate and take tissue out, they take out mostly fatty tissue and not much of the dense breast tissue that assists with breast milk.

Also, find a surgeon who will NOT remove the nipple (called a Free Nipple Graft), as this will better your chances of breastfeeding in the future.

  4. QUESTION:
Can a breast reduction and a breast lift be done at the same time?
I am going to the plastic surgeon for a consultation for breast reduction surgery. I have heard several woman say that now they have small flat breasts now. Can I get mine lifted during the breast reduction surgery to avoid having two surgeries?

    • ANSWER:
Yes you can have a breast lift with the reduction. 99% of reductions have breast lifts included!

How long do you stay swollen for?
When is the first time you see your breast after the surgery?
How long were you in pain for after the surgery?
When did you start feeling yourself again?
When did you start wearing a bra?
When did you feel like you had recovered completely?

    • ANSWER:
Abundance can be a great thing…sometimes. And other times there is such thing as too much of something. Having a large breast size can often lead to a lot of pain and discomfort in a women’s life – not to mention frustration when trying to find clothes that fit right. Getting a Breast Reduction (reduction mammaplasty) can often help in relieving back and shoulder pain in women. If you are tired of feeling discomfort from oversized breasts and you are interested in breast reduction procedures, then you have come to the right place. Not only can Elite Cosmetique help you find a Breast Reduction provider, but Elite Cosmetique will have you paying less!

Breast Reduction (reduction mammaplasty) is the removal of excess breast fat, glandular tissue and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion with your body, and to alleviate the discomfort associated with overly large breasts.

Average Cost: ,000 to ,000 per area
Procedure Length: 2 to 5 hours
In/Outpatient: Based on surgeon’s preference and circumstances of surgery
Anaesthesia: General or local with intravenous sedation
Recovery Period: Back to work in 8 to 12 days. Resume vigorous activities in about 4 weeks.
Duration of Results: Permanent, when maintained by lifestyle and weight management. Breasts sagging over time is normal. Pregnancy can affect results.

  7. QUESTION:
How long after breast reduction surgery will I know my final bra size?
I had breast reduction surgery a month ago and just went shopping for a couple of new bras. I was a 44F and was hoping to go down to a small D/large C ideally. I ended up buying a 40DD which is still so much larger than I wanted. I guess I just wanted to know from those who have had the surgery how long it took for their swelling to go down and when their breasts finally "settled" into their final size/shape. Thank you.

    • ANSWER:
previous to surgery i was a 32F. i asked to be a C cup and my surgeon promised me a C cup. at my final post op appointment at 9 months, I was still measuring a D cup. i was upset, but still happy with the results. then, 2 months ago i went to get measured again (i lost 7 lbs from exercising) and I was measured by victoria's secret as a C cup. 2 dreams were answered. to buy from victoria's secret and be a C cup.
i would say, it will take at least 8 months for all the swelling to go down.

  8. QUESTION:
How long after a breast reduction does swelling go down?
I had a breast reduction a little over a week ago and am still fitting into some of my old bras. I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with this surgery.

    • ANSWER:
it will take 3-5 months for you to know what your true size will be.

  9. QUESTION:
How long after a Breast Reduction can I walk around and travel?
I am getting a breast reduction tomorrow and I have a banquet to go to this Saturday. I was wondering if anyone who has had it done, will I be able to go?

    • ANSWER:
it's up to how you feel. i had my surgery on a monday and didn't go out anywhere until sunday night to a play that i already had tickets for (with the expection of getting my hair washed a few days before since i couldn't do it myself).
you will still have a bandage on but can still wear regular clothes.

  10. QUESTION:
Just got breast reduction surgery, when can I start being physical?
Just got breast reduction surgery, I still have the anesthesia in my blood and can't move my arms. Doc said to rest 6 weeks. But im going crazy here. I need to be active and move. What can I do in the meantime?

    • ANSWER:
Congrats! Breast reduction surgery gives great results. However you need to get back to normal activities gradually. Mobilize after 2 weeks with normal activities and gradually increase the activities to light exercise at 4 weeks. After 6 weeks you should be able to do most of physical activities if everything has gone well. Do consult your doc as to what you can do and what you cant for individual cases vary. But you should be able to do everything you wish to do now.

  11. QUESTION:
How long should you wait to conceive after breast reduction?
I am in the process of preparing for a breast reduction and I was wondering if anyone knows how long you should wait after a breast reduction to get pregnant? My husband and I already have a 2.5 yr old and we are planning to ttc in the near future. He's in the military so the soonest opportunity we would have would be December and then not again until August/September 2008. I haven't had a chance to speak with my surgeon about this concern yet, so I was hoping someone here has experienced this. Assuming things go as planned, we would conceive appr. 8-10 weeks post-op. Is that too soon?
Because I've had back problems for several years now which are exacerbated when I am pregnant. Also, I had problems after the birth of my son do to excess milk production (too much glandular tissue). I almost lost my left breast due to mastitis. The question at hand is not whether I should have a reduction or not. I'm having it. I just want to know if it's okay to ttc in December, or should I wait until next year. We wanted our children born close together but due to deployment with the military and a miscarriage, it hasn't happened so far. If I get pregnant in December, our son will be 3 by the time the next baby is born. If we wait until next year to ttc, he will be 4.

Anyway, my point is, is it too physically early to ttc 8-10 weeks post-reduction?

    • ANSWER:
You should talk to your plastic surgeon about this.

It could be anywhere from 3 months post op till one year post op depending on if you have any complications with your surgery and recovery.

I personally would wait until your incisions are closed and you are back to 100% health before ttc. For me that was about four months post op.

And, unlike what some have said, with a breast reduction, they try to take out as much fatty tissue as they can. USUALLY your breasts go back to the same size after you are done breastfeeding, though that is not ALWAYS the case.

And, if you have extreme back pain, it would be good to get it done NOW. Just make sure your plastic surgeon does NOT do a Free Nipple Graft, as that lessens the chance of you being able to breastfeed after a reduction.

  12. QUESTION:
What is the liposuction part of the breast reduction?
Im getting a breast reduction on one breast in a few weeks and they told my mom that it was a breast reduction and liposuction.. Does anyone have an idea what the lipos for? Maybe the fat where your armpit meets the breast because i have it pretty bad.

    • ANSWER:
I would imagine that is how they remove the fat from the breast. I am saying imagine because I don't know for certain.

  13. QUESTION:
What is the average size for breast reduction?
I am a 32DDD, and really want a breast reduction because well i HATE my boobs. At 105 lbs and 5'2 I am not overweight nor tall, so I'm just wondering what the average cup size is for a breast reduction?

    • ANSWER:
Honestly as most guys would say nothing is wrong with that. But im sure that you are in pain do to the weight of your breast. If i were you i would go down to a D or a big C cup, reason why is because if you change so much it will leave excess skin that could cause problems. I hope this helps, and don't for get you always want a lil cleavage to make your man happy.

I would do what ever makes you the happiest. (Go get a doctors opinion for the precise size of reduction)

  14. QUESTION:
How noticeable are scars from a breast reduction?
I am considering a breast reduction but am really concerned about the scars. I know that I will be scarred for a while as I heal, but how apparent are the scars long term?

    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
i had a breast reduction in oct 08. my scars are already fading. my friend who had the same surgery last year by the same doctor has scars that are barely visible. you have to look super closely to even see that they are there.

however, i look at the scar as a very small price to pay for all the benefits that a breast reduction bring. i am VERY happy with my decision to do it.

  15. QUESTION:
How do i get a breast reduction to reduce my bust size by two cups on the nhs?
I live in england and i am 17 years old, i want to get a breast reduction when i am 18 next year, how do i go abut applying to get a reduction for free?

    • ANSWER:
You need to go to your GP first who will then send you off to a specialist for assessment. To be eligible for a breast reduction it has to be seen it is needed for medical purposes - e.g. that you are affected physically by your enlarged breasts, such as breasts causing (or likely to cause later in life) poor posture, and back problems. Breast reductions can also be carried out if they cause you problems psychologically (e.g. self-esteem greatly affected by unwanted attention/comments your enlarged breasts bring).

Please note - there is a long waiting list for breast reduction surgery - approx 3 years in some parts of the country, so don't get your hopes up about getting the reduction next year - it is very unlikely.

  16. QUESTION:
How do i go about getting a breast reduction, Im scared the scars will look really ugly?
I am 5'0, 20 years old, im about 130 lbs and I wear size 36F..maybe FF im not sure. What if the breast reduction surgery leaves horrible scars or my nipples arent alligned? It will be too late to fix it!

    • ANSWER:
You should have the surgery done by a board certified plastic surgeon. A lot of doctors do the procedure, but are not qualified to do it. Don't just go to a general surgeon.

The scars are usually under the breast or hidden in the areola area, so they won't be noticeable and the plastic surgeon is trained to do almost invisible scars. If they know what they are doing, your nipples will be fine.

There's a good chance it will be covered by insurance. When I worked in insurance, if they removed a pound from each, it was covered.

  17. QUESTION:
How much is a breast reduction in the UK?
I want a breast reduction because I'm a 32F and I'm still growing. I'm 17 years old and I hate it because everyone stares, it's near impossible to find bras and they hurt my back.

    • ANSWER:
      Don't do it!!!

  18. QUESTION:
What are the pros and cons to a breast reduction?
I am considering a breast reduction. I want to know all the possiblities. Also what is the recovering time? What time frame would I need to be off work?

    • ANSWER:
      Pros:

smaller bras, no back pain, no shoulder pain, can buy bras in stores and NOT special order them, a bra is only if you get a really fancy one and not a granny bra, no back pain

      Cons:

      NONE!

I had it Feb 2006 and don't regret it one bit!

You should take off at least two weeks, more if you are in a physically active job as you do not want to move your arms too much.

FULL recovery can take up to a year, do NOT put your scars into the sun until they turn white, or they will turn permanently red!

  19. QUESTION:
What are the risks of a breast reduction?
And what is the difference between a breast reduction and a breast lift?

    • ANSWER:
In a reduction they reduce the size of your breasts, and usually do a lift at the same time

In a lift, they work with the muscles to physically LIFT the breasts from their current position - usually without reduction

there are many risks - of course any time you are put under there is a risk - infection is a huge risk - there is the risk of not being able to breast feed - and a botched plastic surgery procedure can lead to several complications

i have considered it myself as I have large breasts - but i have decided to wait until i'm all done having children - cause they will only get worse, and it is very important to me to breast feed (16 weeks pregnant!)

Be sure the DR you are going through is GOOD at what he does - ask to see previous pictures, patient testimonials - and maybe try to find somewhere you can research the DR and his past procedures to see any issues

  20. QUESTION:
How long is the total healing time after breast reduction surgery?
I am considering breast reduction surgery. I want to know what to expect and what complications others have experienced.

    • ANSWER:
I was out of work for two weeks, and then slowly worked my way back up into full activities after a month.

I was able to shower 24 hours after surgery BUT some PS's want you to wait a few days... different PS's have different methods. I just put my back to the shower head and let the water run over my incisions and steri strips.

Telfa pads from CVS/Rite Aid. They are nonstick pads that you can put over your incisions if they are still leaking. I loved them!

My incisions took at least two months to fully close (so no baths or swimming until the incisions are 10000% closed or else you'll get a nasty infection!).

My swelling went down after a few months (though it can take up to a year to get your final size).

My sensation came back after three months (but can take over a year to regain sensation).

Scars take about a year to fade, so unless they are white do not put them into the sun or they will turn permanently red. Use Mederma and ScarGuard and they will be barely noticeable (like mine!).

Also take some "arnica montana" I bought it on amazon's website. It helped me out a lot with my bruising and swelling.

You have to sleep on your back for a while, at least until the incisions close. Its a pain in the butt, but I bought a wedge pillow and it helped out TONS.

I experienced a few split stitches (it looks like a piece of rice). You don't pull them, you clip them and they eventually dissolve or fall out.

Your incisions MAY scab over. DO NOT pull the scabs. If they don't come off easy, clip the part of the scab that is free and let the part still connected to your breast come off on its own. I had a little bit part of a scab on, I pulled it off, the next day I had this nasty open spot that I had to treat with solutions. It took a month or two to heal. So do not pull scabs off!

LISTEN to your doctor. ANY questions you have, ask the PS first. I've found that different PS's have different methods. Like when to shower, when to travel, when to do normal activities, how to treat open spots, etc.

I have tons of more information for you, but those are the basics.

This site helped me out tons before and after my surgery.

  21. QUESTION:
How long is the process to get a breast reduction if in the military?
I am in the military (AF) and I was wondering about how long the process takes to get a breast reduction. For instance, how many consultations will I need with my PCM in order to get referred to a plastic surgeon? Will I have to go speak with a psychatrist first?

    • ANSWER:
It depends on what size breasts you have and also if you have documented problems caused by your breasts. Such as, back and neck pain, rashes, shoulder indentation, headaches and many other things. I am a 38DDD and my PCM told me her could get me approved (my husband is active duty Marine). However, when he was on recruiting duty we were seen at a civilian doctor and I asked for a reduction and TriCare said I was not large enough! But, when we got stationed at Cherry Point my doc said he could get me approved no problem because he got another woman who was smaller than me approved. I think as long as your doc is actually on base it is easier for approval. Stupid, but true. Good luck.

p.s. A breast reduction is a MEDICAL procedure not cosmetic!! And the men and women who serve this country deserve the BEST medical treatment out there. They are fighting for your freedom! Civilians are not paying for our insurance! The military members work hard and put their lives on the line so shame on you for saying such terrible things!

  22. QUESTION:
What are the cons of breast reduction surgery?
I'm 18 and I currently wear a 40DDD.My back is in pain because of it and I hate that I can't wear certain tops, but what are the cons of breast reduction?I really would like to know.

    • ANSWER:
      Think of your boyfriend here!
I also am going for this surgery in six months time, Yes you do need drain tubes, but think of the wonderful results, less back pain, and shoulder pain, neck as well. It will hurt, for some time, but in the long run, it will be the best thing for you. Take care, and don't worry, long term affects far outway the discomfort from the actual surgery. Take care.
Pros.. no more back pain (if you have experienced this due to the weight of your breasts), fitting into tops/shirts of your interest.

Cons... All I can think of is the recovery process.
No- using the drains is actually involved in outdated techniques for breast reduction. There are many new technique now which use minimal incisions and therefore minimal scarring, for example an older technique is the anchor method with a scar running around and down from the nipple and under the breast, the most popular technique now is the Le Jour incision which involves scarring only around the nipple and directly down (there is no scar underneath the breasts). I suppost the pros would be that you have smaller breasts but that is also a con (if you are like me I am a bit sad about losing breast size), you will no longer have back, neck, shoulder etc pain. You will be able to wear great clothes without looking fat and a wierd shape and the list of pros goes on and on.

      Good luck !!!

  23. QUESTION:
What are requirements for a breast reduction?
Okay so I am 14 years old. In January of 2011 I was a c cup and by the end of march I was a dd. I have sharp pains in my back, shoulders and neck. Also people have made up mean nicknames about it. My mom thinks breast reduction is a good idea. Would I be a candidate?

    • ANSWER:

  24. QUESTION:
How much does breast reduction surgery cost?
I was wondering if anyone could quote a price for breast reduction surgery in Australia.

I am 5'1 and a 32E and they give me the worst back ache.

    Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
Not much if you get it covered by insurance.

Insurance covered mine 100% (,000 USD) and I only had to pay a copay for the overnight hospital stay.

  25. QUESTION:
What should I expect at a breast reduction consultation?
I have my first consultation with a plastic surgeon tomorrow to discuss breast reduction surgery. Has anybody done this? What should I expect on my first visit? Will he want to look at what he's "working with" or is it mainly just a discussion about the surgery? I want to know what to expect. Any advice about breast reduction surgery would be great!

    • ANSWER:
the doctor will ask you questions like why do you want it done, what kind of pain, etc? then the doctor will examine them and take pictures. s/he will also explain the surgery to you, how the procedure is done and what it is like. you can them ask any questions you want.
with some insurances, you may know right away, others you have to wait.
then you will book your surgery date. it can always be canceled at a later time if you are not approved.

      good luck!

  26. QUESTION:
How bad of scars does a breast reduction leave?
I'm eighteen with D cups, and they are too large for my figure and frame to support, and I'm having back problems. I'm worried about the scars a breast reduction would leave, and I'm wondering what the best suggestion is.

    • ANSWER:
Presuming you have a good doctor--who should be a plastic surgeon--the scars will be barely noticable once they heal, probably almost completely invisible after a six months or a year.

they will go around the areolas, then straight down the underside of your breasts, and around about 1/3 of the bottom in a curve. The bottom scars are hidden by the natural sagging of your breasts, and the ones around areolas look like they're supposed to be there.

I had mine done ages ago, and I'm really glad I did. If you're having back problems, your insurance may cover the cost of the surgery.

  27. QUESTION:
Is there a breast reduction procedure which removes only fat and not milk ducts?
I am considering a breast reduction, but would only do it if there is a procedure which I was guaranteed would not impair my ability to breastfeed in the future. Does such a procedure exist? If so, how does it work and how much does it cost?

    • ANSWER:
i had breast reduction done the end of june, and although i have had some unforseen complications, i would do it agian in a heartbeat.

Breast Reduction has made many advances in the last 20 years, and most of the time now, the patient is still able to breast feed after having the surgery, i think that the risk of losing the ability goes up the more you have taken off. in saskachewan reduction is covered 100%, over medicare, but most insurance companies should cover most to all of it because it weighs on you back, causing back pousture problems and soreness etc; i am sure you know what i am talking about ;) .

when i had my surgery, the surgeon cut around my nipple, and then made a key hole shape starting above the nipple and also cut a wide u shape around the bottom of the breast side to side. this is all drawn out on the breast before the surgery. then after the inscisions are made the tissue is taken out and the skin and hopeully all of the ducts and such are folded inside so that they are still connected and alive, and the two straight sides of the key hole are stitched (mine were stapled) together, and sewn to the wide u shaped incision at the bottom and the nipple is sewn to the circular part of the keyhole so that your breasts are lifted and pretty looking ;) . my surgery took two hours from anesthesia to being brought to recovery and i stayed in recovery for four hours after that. some hospitals require an overnight stay, some do not. the next day i went back to have my bandages recovered and 4 days later i could take my bandages off.

good luck because it is one of the most worth it thing.

      hope this helped

  28. QUESTION:
What are common issues after a breast reduction?
I had a breast reduction about a month ago. I got a rash a week after the surgery. The doctor thinks I had an allergic reaction to the Vicodin. I was given betamethosone ointment, and it cleared up for the most part. Now, all of a sudden, my breasts are very sore, and there are areas on my breasts that are hard. Is this normal?

    • ANSWER:
when i had my reduction i was sore for about 3 months. i couldn't sleep on my stomach for longer than that. it takes time to heal.

  29. QUESTION:
What are the pros and cons of a breast reduction?
Right now my bra size is a 40E and I've considered getting a breast reduction but I want to weigh out the pros and cons.

do I have to buy new clothes?
how long until I can get back to work?
does a breast lift really come with it?

    • ANSWER:
Cloths: you should be buying a smaller sized shirt, depending on how small you get them.
Work: 2 days to 6 weeks depending on the person and "complications" not included... complications are sadly more often than they should.
      Breast lift:
It should come with a lift as to get a reduction they normally cut in the same way as a lift is done. So one is automatically done.

Pros - it's an easy way to loose breast size
      cons - normally surgery problems
not really a solution to the problem
      no breast feeding...
      etc...

suggestion: look at natural ways of reducing them before surgery... loosing weight will be a better option with that size as you're allready a bit larger. Loosing 20 pounds will probably get you down two cups

  30. QUESTION:
How to best support a friend after breast reduction surgery?
My best friend will be going through breast reduction surgery in a few days. I want to support her as much as can during the recovery, but unsure of the best way to go about it as it's not a situation I've ever been in before. If you've gone through this type of surgery, how did your friends and family support you? Or how could they have helped you better? I am male, and I'm afraid that also may lead to at least some degree of awkwardness with my friend as well.

    Thanks for any advice

    • ANSWER:
Flowers are nice, and I imagine she would enjoy them.

Is there a special food your friend likes? If so, bring her some as soon as the doctor lifts any dietary restrictions there might be.

Massage her hands and feet: That will help her to relax, and some studies have suggested that just plain touching seems to help the healing process.

Bring her funny movies to watch, and watch them with her.

Above all, if she wants to talk, Listen.

      Good luck, and bless you.

  31. QUESTION:
How long is recovery for breast reduction surgery?
I'm in need of a breast reduction surgery... I'm a 32F. I feel that my breast size actually hinders my physical capabilities (and being in the military, I need to be quite physically fit). Not to mention it's near impossible to actually find a good bra.

But, because I am in the army, the recovery time may prevent me from getting the surgery.

So I was curious: How long is recovery for breast reduction surgery?

    • ANSWER:
      Hello Crissy,

Everyone is different and will heal at different speeds. On average, full recovery is 6 weeks. You would need to avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting for 1 week. Post-op appointments are important to make sure your recovery is on track.

    • ANSWER:
Hi - I had this surgery in January of this year. There were two sites that I found enormously helpful (listed below). Do not hesitate to tell your surgeon that you need more information. It's not too late to ask. Please, please take care of yourself. You only get one chance to heal properly.

In the meantime, here are some key things you should definitely do now.

      1) Try not to lift anything over 7 pounds for the next 3-4 weeks. Definitely do not lift things that need to be placed above your head. This means try not to lift babies if you have them. Have somebody help you put dishes away, etc.

      2) Rest. Your body is healing and needs all the rest it can get.

      3) Eat a healthful diet. I followed the Healing Diet that you will find on the sites below. Basically, this means lean protein, leafy vegetables, dark vegetables (red, orange, green - like broccoli, red bell peppers, etc.) and plenty of fresh fruit, especially pineapple because it has bromelain which promotes healing.

      4) Sleep on your back for at least the next 3 months. Try placing pillows along side your body to make sure you don't turn during the night.

  34. QUESTION:
Considering Breast Reduction but have Fibromyalgia is it a good idea?

  35. QUESTION:
Has anybody had a breast reduction and tummy tuck together? How long did it take you to recover?
I'm on a weight loss mission in 2007, and I'm hoping to lose 115 pounds.

I am hoping against hope that I won't have to have a ton of plastic surgery to achieve the kind of body I want, and I am desperately afraid of being put under general anesthesia.

Has anyone had both a breast lift or reduction and a tummy tuck at the same time under local anesthesia and sedation?

Also, how long did it take you to recover from the surgery? How long did you need to have someone at your home to help you?

    • ANSWER:
Tummy tuck and Breast reduction surgery is very safe nowadays. My cousin got her breast reduction, tummy tuck and facelift surgery in India by the company called Forerunners Healthcare .The Price for the surgery she paid in India was very less. She paid 30% of the cost she was quoted in America.

Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India. They arrange cosmetic and plastic surgery for foreigners in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low price, as the breast reduction, tummy tuck, facelift and other cosmetic surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

  36. QUESTION:
Should I get a breast reduction now or after I have children?
I have wanted to get a breast reduction since I was 16 or so. I just now feel stable and ready enough to, but, now I am 23 and intend on having children before I am 30. Should I TRY to suck it up and wait until after I've gone through my pregnancies? I want it so badly but feel it would be a waste if going through pregnancy will just adverse any progress the surgery makes, what do I do?

    • ANSWER:
Well, the probability that you’ll have to do it again after you are having kids is pretty high. So financially it doesn’t make a lot of sense. And I am not talking about all things associated with a surgery. Every surgery is not a piece of cake. But again if psychologically in your mind you are having a different image of yourself and you want it so badly…, just weight all pros and contras

  37. QUESTION:
Does anyone know if you had a breast reduction if it is still possible to breast feed?
I had a breast reduction last december, and now my fiance and I are trying to conceive and I want to breast feed. Anyone know if it is still possible, personal experiences would be great!

    Thank you!

    • ANSWER:
Yes, ma'am!! I've done a lot of research on this and I plan to get a reduction as well and hope to breastfeed. You might be one of those people who would have never been able to breastfeed anyway, so try not to blame the reduction if that happens to you. But, if you don't go to a reputable surgeon which I'm sure you did, then I have heard of problems and I have heard of problems -rarely- of people with reductions who were affected by their surgery when trying to feed, but it's so much more uncommon then it used to be.

  38. QUESTION:

Hi there, I have been for a couple of consultations in London in recent months and they will make you whatever size you want, especially if your paying for it! They just ask you to consider being a size that looks natural with body size/shape. I am a 36G and am planning to go down to a 36C before Christmas.
I used to be a size 10/12 and play so much sport and now I can't do anything because my back hurts and I put on weight because I can no longer exercise comfortably.

You are not too young to have surgery. Girls as young as 15 get it done.

I had this surgery and I was in no pain, just a little discomfort.

I want to know what type of exercises and exercise routine should one adopt after undergoing a tummy tuck and male breast reduction? HOW MUCH TIME SHOULD ONE GIVE BEFORE RETURNING TO THE GYM? What type fitness routine is most advised following surgery?

  44. QUESTION:
When can I start being sexually active after a breast reduction?
It's been a week since the breast reduction and I'm wondering when it's safe to start being sexually active again (obviously not taking off my surgical bra yet). My husband and I have our one year anniversary next Monday... at that point I'll be 2 weeks post-surgery.

    • ANSWER:
You need to talk to your PS about this.

IMO it should be whenever you are comfortable with it, and AFTER your incisions are fully healed.

You should at least wait a month.

  45. QUESTION:
Is there any life threatening risks on having a breast reduction surgery?
my sister is going to have a breast reduction surgery and she is scared that something bad will happen to her like dying.
so i was wondering if it is possible to die after or during the surgery?
and what can i do to make her less worried?

    • ANSWER:
Any time anesthesia is administered there is the possibility of death. The doctor and the hospital is required (in the US) to have your sis sign what is called Informed Consent. By law, they have to list all of the things that could go wrong, and one of these items is death. The odds are that your sis will be OK but no one can guarantee that. I personally know 3 people who have had breast reduction surgeries and all 3 were delighted with the results. Post surgery she can expect to look like Frankenstein's bride but with time the scars will fade. The back and neck pain will go away, clothing that fits will be found in stores, and she'll look 25 pounds lighter. If I had large breasts that created problems I'd have the surgery.

Glad to hear of your reduction. I went down to a C cup because when I lose weight I do not want to end up being too small.

  48. QUESTION:
Has anyone had a breast reduction and were later able to breastfeed?
I had a breast reduction over a year ago and was told that I probably won't be able to breast feed when I have children? Have you heard of anyone that defied these odds? If it makes any difference I had the "lollipop" procedure.

    • ANSWER:
My sister had a breast reduction when she was a teenager (lollipop procedure) and she is breastfeeding her newborn.

Most times, it can be overcome if you are willing to put in the work. For anyone, breast feeding can be difficult, especially at first, and a lot of women want to give up within the first two weeks (myself included). Do not give up! It will get easier. Do not panic if you don't have milk at first or production seems dissapointing.
You make a small amount of colostrum for the baby, which is sufficiant. It is chuck full of antibodies and nutrients.
In a few days, your milk will let down and you will feel engorged (tight, hot, huge, and sore). This will take another few days of nursing to subside and give you a more freeflowing supply of milk.

If you decide to supplement milk and or pump your milk, rule of thumb...
Everytime your baby takes a bottle pump on both sides. This will keep you milk flow up to par and may increase it..Always pump for a period of time (15 min on each breast). Do not let the fact that your nipples have stopped expressing milk after 5 minutes make you feel like you're done. This will build up your milk supply and eventually your body will produce more milk to keep up.

Hope this helps! Make sure you drink plenty of water and do relaxing breathing exercises when you nurse. Find a quiet place and relax. Tension hinders milk let down and makes things hard on you and your baby.

    • ANSWER:
If you want to wait then wait, but if you are having back pain you should look into getting one now.

I had mine done in Feb 2006 (38J to 38C) and don't regret it one bit. I plan on having kids in the future.
