     You have to go under anesthesia to have breast implants. Anesthesia comes with all kinds of risks. Any time you have a surgery, you are breaking the skin's integrity, which could lead to an infection. Severe infections could cause death, or leave you disfigured in that area if they have to remove tissue to get rid of the infection. And then there's the complications that arise with implanting things into your body. They fill the implant with saline, which is safe should the implant rupture (that's unlikely), but your body may treat the implant as a foreign invader. You can get a hematoma (large collections of blood) in that area, as well as calcified areas. It's really not worth it. I understand why women want larger breasts, but how would feel if you have a severe complication for vanity's sake? Ultimately it's your choice, and if you decide that you want to have a breast augmentation, then go for it, just make sure you educate yourself on the things that could happen. If you have a good, well-known surgeon, he or she will educate about the things that could happen, and a an experienced surgeon is less likely to make a mistake.    what are the risks of breast implants?
   Does anybody know what are the major risks of breast augmentation? I've been told that they harden over time, is this true? I'm thinking of getting them done and would like to know what i'm up against. Also, i know there's a large market of pills that increase cup size, does anybody know which pills actually works? I would hate to spend money on placebo. Thanks in advance!

   • ANSWER:
     Herbs sometimes work, depending on the person. The pills are made up of these herbs but cost way more and have a little of each one. You have to find out which one is right for you though and do a lot of research. For example, thin lips and broad shoulders could mean you have high testosterone levels or low estrogen levels which inhibit breast tissue growth so you would take the herb fenugreek to up your estrogen levels...etc.

     Herbs will take a long time and won't cause a dramatic size increase. If you want to gain more than a cup I would recommend the implants. I've had implants for a year and haven't felt them harden at all. If you're worried about them getting hard, you should opt for silicone since it is softer and more natural feeling than saline (although the health risks are higher).

   are there any serious risks with getting breast augmentation?
   ....just wondering because i plan on getting breast augmentation someday..i'm 20 years old and am completely flat chested - can barely even fill out an A cup. im not like superskinny though, i'm just average weight....so i don't know why im flat chested but i'm very self-conscious about it as i don't feel like my age because of the fact that i have no boobs.

   ....anyways... so i'm just wondering if there are any serious health risks involved with breast augmentation.. both short term and long term. i'd love to get done someday if i can... not just so i can feel my age, but also so it will be easier to shop cuz i can't fill out half the tops and dresses out there, lol!

     These are some of the risks of getting breast augmentation:

     Capsular contracture
     Capsular contracture is a scar that forms around the implant, causing it to feel firm, look unnatural, and potentially hurt. When you see pictures of a woman with obvious implants who looks like she has "coconut breasts", she more than likely has a severe capsular contracture. These are though to be less common and less severe with saline implants than with silicone implants, although studies are underway to determine whether this is true. If you develop a mild capsular contracture, you may not be bothered by it and may not even notice you have one. If you develop one that is moderate or severe, you will probably require surgery to correct the problem. Surgery involves removing the scar and placing a new implant. In spite of this, the capsular contracture may return.

     Interference with mammography
     Breast implants do interfere with the ability of a mammogram to "see" all of your breast tissue. Placing the implant under the muscle allows for the least amount of interference.

     Implant displacement
     Implants can move out of position at anytime after breast augmentation surgery. They can move upward, downward, left or right. If they move only a little, you may not even notice. If they move a lot, you may need further surgery to move them back into position. Fortunately, this problem is not common. The larger the implant, the greater the chance that it will displace downward. Find out more about implant displacement.

     Saline Implant deflation
     Saline implants can develop a leak and deflate. If this happens, your breast will shrink to its preoperative size over a matter of a day or so. You will need another breast augmentation surgery to replace the deflated implant.

     Silicone Implant rupture
     Whereas saline implants are said to deflate when the silicone shell becomes disrupted, silicone implants are said to rupture. It really is the same thing, except that when silicone gel implant shells rupture, the silicone does not become quickly reabsorbed by your body. Hence, you might not know whether you have a rupture. If silicone gel extrudes out of the implant shell, then it might provoke an inflammatory response, leading to...that's right....a capsular contracture. This is often the first sign of a silicone gel implant rupture. Whereas ruptures occurred with great frequency in implants made in the 1980's, the newer silicone gel implants have thicker shells and are presumed to have a lower rupture rate (studies are underway). If you develop a moderate or severe capsular contracture with a silicone implant, then the usual treatment is surgical removal of the implant along with the capsule, which is really made up of surrounding scar tissue.      Rippling
     This is the visible appearance of waviness of the skin over your implants, like the ripples of a wave on a lake. Some doctors refer to this as "wrinkling."

     Infection
     Infection, if it occurs, usually does so within two months of surgery. Infection occurs in about 1% of all implant surgeries. If an infection occurs it often requires antibiotics and the removal of the involved implant. A new implant can be placed six months later, which means you would have to go for six months with very uneven breasts. Find out more about implant infections.

     Nipple numbness
     If the possibility of having numb nipples is unacceptable to you, you should not have breast augmentation because no surgeon can guarantee preservation of nipple sensation. The national risk of having permanently numb nipples is about 15%. Find out more about numbness and changes in sensation.

     Breast feeding and pregnancy
     Breast feeding ability is not altered by implants. Many women ask about the effect of future pregnancy on augmented breasts. In most cases, implants will not affect the fate of your postpartum breasts. Here is why: following pregnancy (and breast feeding), your breasts will shrink to their pre-pregnancy size (or there about). During this process of shrinking, your breast skin may either tighten or not tighten. If it tightens, you will most likely not have breast droop. If it does not tighten, then your breasts will unfortunately droop. Whether or not the skin tightens has little or nothing to do with the presence or absence of implants.

   A lady friend of mine asked me about breast augmentation, how it is done, and about the risks. Before I send her a reply I would like to hear your guy's opinions.

     The controversy over silicone implants was resolved with their reintroduction in 2006, but this most popular of all cosmetic surgeries still has some risks. The three major complications are that the implants may rupture or leak, they may become infected or scar tissue may form around the implant itself.

     The rupture rate is only about one percent a year. Infection is a surgical risk in any operation. But scar tissue, that can be a problem. In fact, it can become so thick and tight around the implants that it deforms the breast and cause pain. If women come back ten or twenty years after their implant surgery, it's because of the scar tissue.

     For a silicone implant, the incision will be much larger and there will be a much larger scar than with saline but it feels more like a natural breast. The decision is up to each individual, but those are the options.

   Is it safe to have a second breast augmentation?
   I had a breast augmentation to fix my sclerosis. Thankfully, the augmentation was enough to fix the deformity without more cutting than a small incision (in some cases more reconstructive work is required). I would like to have them redone to improve their shape.

     The risks involved with breast revision surgery are the same as the first augmentation. The only difference with the revision is that there will be scar tissue from the original implant that the surgeon will have to work through.      Apparently the physical state of the person has a lot to do with the result of the procedure. Individuals who are too thin can have an increased risk of the implants bottoming out on both or just one breast. The term "bottoming out" means that the inserted sac may have slipped lower than the other side, creating an uneven height for the nipple and the chest. If this happens just a few weeks after breast augmentation, it may have been caused by the pocket being too big. If it takes several years, then the implant may have naturally slid down due to its weight. Individual who are too thin or have less tissue in the area run the risk of this problem more than others.

     Another risk that is factored by thinness or lack of substance in the chest is symmastia. This is a condition in which the woman's new set of mammary glands may appear too close together. This is unnatural looking at best and is caused by some factors such as too much dissecting of the tissues to create a cleavage and the lack of natural fat or muscle in the breasts.

     Caspular contracture is another risk that can happen randomly to any woman who has just undergone a breast augmentation procedure. It occurs when the body naturally tries to enclose the foreign object that has been implanted into its midst. It is not the implant that hardens but the tissue itself as it tries to encapsulate the implant. Although not all individuals may develop capsular contracture, it usually occurs just a few weeks after the operation.

   High blood pressure and having breast augmentation surgery?
   I am having breast augmentation surgery in June and I have high blood pressure is it safe and what are the risk to consider. I'm really nervous. I am taking medication but the surgeon said I will have to get a release from my doctor.

     Well, you sure have to tell the doctor. As far as I know there's no problem if you take the medication and keep it under control, because the instruments used in surgery will tell the doctor your blood pressure. On the other hand if you have high blood pressure in your eyes (glaucoma) and you're having a surgery in there it will be very dangerous.

10. QUESTION:
    Just has a breast augmentation and later found out I was 4 to 6 weeks pregnant. Anesthesia risk?
    I was shocked and still am. I had my period, so I can't believe it - on top of that, my husband and I have been trying for years and never could. Anyway, I went under twice. The second time was due to one breast bleeding. My main concern is the effects of the anesthesia to the baby. Has this ever happen to anyone? - and "yes" I did see my doctor, but I'm still concern and want advice. I'm happy but concerned all in one.

      The risks are actually very slim. The biggest risk is loss of the pregnancy, which would have happened shortly after the surgery.

      The drugs we use are used safely during pregnancy all the time. There are theoretical risks of birth defects with use of nitrous oxide, but it's not something that has been identified as a teratogen.

      Uh...don't do that.
      When you do these things to your body, you're putting your body at risks and doing unnatural things to it.

      Think about the baby, not yourself.

12. QUESTION:
    How much weight should I lose to undergo a breast augmentation?
    I currently weigh 210 lbs, but I have small breasts and would like breast implants. I know that my weight can pose as an issue in having the surgery. I'm currently in the process of losing weight and I was wondering what an ideal weight would be to undergo the surgery without a high risk.

      I don't think that your current weight is as much of an issue with augmentation as the augmentation while loosing weight would be. Loosing weight after augmentation can cause rippling in the implants to become visible. It is best to wait until you are finished loosing weight to have the procedure done.

      I have seen many breast implanted women topless (lots of friends) The thing is.. unless you're going into the porno business i wouldn't recommend it, they look great under a shirt and that's about it. you could get the same effect by gluing two balloons to your chest and drawing nipples on them, once you're older you could change your mind about them as well, I used to think they were awesome when i was 18. 7 years later i think they look tacky and ugly.

Guys check natural women on the web so much more (check the latest porn stars) because they feel so much more real and nice, small and saggy it's still very feminine. Implants are something I could get myself on myself, so what's the point of getting excited touching a stretched skin over plastic with nipple pointing straight out and no concave curves anymore, just concave?

    Questions about breast augmentation?
    I'm 19 years old. My breasts are significantly different sizes, and I'm considering getting breast implants. Can anyone tell me about a) approximate cost, b) how to find a good plastic surgeon, and c) risk of breast cancer (my mother has been in remission for five years-- will breast implants increase my risk?). I want them to look and feel natural-- can someone who has gotten breast augmentation talk with me on that point?       I had augmentation done 3 years ago, in my area the cost was 00, there are programs that most PS have to finance it if needed. There isn't a risk of Breast Cancer and implants. For the natural look and feel having the implants put under the muscle is the best in my opinion, that is what I did. Have you ever seen a bad "boob job"? sometimes when not placed under the muscle there are ripples...which is the implant showing, under the muscle decreases that in my opinion. You can have decrease in sensation or it can go the total opposite and they be really sensitive, mine are very sensitive. I was told that breast feeding is still an option with my implants. Do your research, I'd start on line, you'll find lots of information out there, then start searching in your area for a surgeon, make sure you clear with them on what you want your end result to be.     I'm considering breast augmentation. Before I say anymore, this is something that I want to do for myself and no one else.

      Rebecca, not sure if you spoken with your surgeon about using your own fat, but here is some info to keep in mind:

      Although it seems ideal, using your own fat for breast augmentation has a risk of complications. Fat grafting, especially in the amount needed for a breast, requires the transfer of blood vessels along with the fatty tissue to keep it alive. It is not as simple as suctioning out fat in one part of the body and injecting it to your chest.

    Should I get a breast augmentation (one side)?
    I am 17 and trying to decide if I should get an implant in my left breast, which is literally two cup sizes smaller than the right breast. It was my mom idea, and it would help a lot with self esteem (I hate wearing bathing suits and tank tops), but I'm afraid of the risks... I've never had any real surgery done...

      Well if you wait until your 22 (hopfully its the same in Canada as in united States) you can get the silicone implants which feel ALMOST real (lol my friend got them, theyre so soft & squishy lmao)

    She and I are the same size body except she is a bit thinner than I am.       I don't know Dr. Rey..but Dr. Brian Kinney is in the LA area and he is an excellent surgeon. He uses actipatch for post surgery pain management and is very sensitive!

I am tired of the soreness and hardness and want to know what can make my breast soft again.

      The sooner you start the treatments the better. The treatments can be uncomfortable, but so is the condition. Your therapist will work only with her hands and gently release the scar tissue a little at a time. She should also train you to work the scar tissue yourself making the process go a lot faster.

      I wish you could do this but the answer is i don't think so. make if the fat was removed and distilled some how.

      The truth is that you will grow into the right breast size for you. Your friend may end up staying a DDD or she might lose weight and go down a cup or so. You might end up going up to a DDD or a G cup. It's possible who knows.

      A small percentage of all breast cancers are found by the woman herself. Most that are found early are found on mammogram. Implants do not increase risk or cause much of a problem with imagining. They can make things difficult if a biopsy is needed as there is a risk of puncturing it.

      You are too thin. Eat. That will help will out your breasts. Wait till you are over 21 to consider breast implants. Once you get them, you can't just take them out and go back to what you were.       As far as having breast implants go, you can easily search the internet and find out about he risks, most of them are out there and I wouldn't worry as the Dr as legally bound to make sure you know all the risks involved.

      From my experience, this type of procedure is alot more straighforward than it used to be when they used silicone (which they don't use anymore due to the cancer risk).

      My only advice would be to go for tear drop style - these look more natural as they don't give you that fake looking line at the top of the breast.

      You are being very mature by researching and looking into the possible risks and once you know then all I say go for it if it will make you happy. If you have a partner or husband, I would also see what they say. They may not be attracted to a fake style boob (these feel TOTALLY different to a normal breast i.e. quite hard). Even though this choice should be up to you, i.e. your decision, I think it is only fair to check with your partner as it could affect your sex life.

      With regard to sensitivity, don't worry too much - as long as you go to a good Dr and don't have it done on the cheap you should be OK.

      I would also make sure you only go for one or two sizes larger (especially if you are only having your breasts done to lift them if they have drooped due to children) - this means you won't have to have your nipple relocated (which can cause loss of sensitivity).

      Good luck. I know quite a bit about this subject although have not had this surgery myself.

      Thought about it - in order to get larger breasts but then decided against it.

      Each to their own I say. If you are 100% go for it and enjoy your new look - as long as you are 100% aware of the risks (as you will be by the time you make your decision).

    Can capsular contracture (hardening of breast tissue after breast augmentation) be easily removed by a surgeon?
    I had a breast augmentation 16 years ago. The "hardening" in one of my breasts has deformed that breast, in time, and I was told years ago that it was called "capsular contracture". Regardless of what it is called, the hardening of that breast (over the muscle, not under) is now showing more, as gravity has taken it's course since I first had this augmentation done. The other breast is fine, and has drooped naturally with time and age. I am 53 years of age, and in very good trim shape (not afraid of surgery, although I HAVE been told there is always a chance of infection (which DOES scare me, because if infection is VERY bad, the new implant would have to be taken out for approx 3 to 6 mths I believe). I am trying to make the decision of whether or not the surgery (removing old implants, removing old hardening (the capsular contracture)? I was told that removing means like "peeling lots of layers of wallpaper". I am not sure if this is only time consuming, or very difficult for a surgeon, or BOTH? If it is pretty normal proceedure that most cosmetic breast surgery surgeons perform, then my decision to have the implants changed would be a yes. If it is very difficult and high risk, then I will leave well enough alone. I have no complications, as it is only the hardening (not painful) that bothers me physically. Would there be any surgeons out there that would know the answer to this? I have had only one surgeon give me her answers, so far, and would like to have a couple more opinions, if possible.       Immediately after surgery, they feel VERY heavy!! If you get saline implants, they will feel very fake and you will be able to feel what feels like a plastic bag (it's the implant of course) under your skin, very easily. If you go with SILICONE, they feel much more natural, much softer. Of course they don't feel REAL because, well.. they're not, it's a filled bag under your skin no matter how you look at it. I had saline to begin with and switched to silicone and am much happier. But they are by no means HARD. I love mine and am so happy I can fill out a shirt now, and I don't have to wear bras with uncomfortable gel inserts, woohoo!! Good luck to you!

    Im 23 and i recently did blood test because i had too much hair loss and i found out that my iron is too low and the doctor gave me a treatment which is named Legofer.

      You should be fine, but you can call your doctor and ask about your concerns, he might run another test to check your iron, but you can eat high iron foods to help. Such as:

    My breast implants popped 3 years ago, but the implants are still inside. Is there any risks?
    I can not afford to have them removed or even replaced at the time. They are saline with a silicone shell. After 5 years. they deflated, and now the empty bags have been in there for 3 yrs. I plan on getting them removed and redone at the same time, opposed to getting the bags removed then later on having the augmentation again.     My breast surgery is scheduled next week. I breastfed my baby for 2.5 years and quit just 2 month ago. My Doc told me that its recomended to wait for 6 mos to do the surgery , cus there is possibility i have milk left over & there is a risk of infection He checked me and said that i am ok to do the surgery, I already did all the tests and preparation. Also they'll put me on antibiotics starting the day before surgery, that should help to avoid infection. My Q is Am I @ the big risk for infection or complication? I will have a lift & fulfill my volume, I got soft hangin' skin left after the long brestfeeding, I mean u can roll the brests up - i need to fix them for sure & get proportional, I am 25y.o, 5'5 and 110 Lb in good shape, barbells & gym r not helpin from that extra sagging skin

      Breast augmentation is serious surgery with many risks. If you stopped 2 months ago, you're body is still in the middle of the many adjustments associated with breastfeeding. My wife's breast shrank a whole cup size after breastfeeding and we have talked about the possibility of breast augmentation after we're completely done having children. But no doubt we/she would wait at least a year. I think it is way too soon for you and the fact the doctor is saying "should be alright" is not very reassuring.

    I've been contemplating the sugery for years now actually, since the fifth grade (I'm going into tenth now). My mom has had hers done, and when I was complaining about how I was the only girl without any boobs at all, she mentioned that she'd be willing to pay for mine. Yes, this was in fifth grade. Yes, my my family is really messed up.

    But anyways, what's your stance on it? If I were to get the surgery it would be for me, and nobody else; not because my mother or anyone else pushed me into it. Yes, my mom said she would let me use her surgeon, but I was the one who suggested it. My A-cup chest just makes me feel really grossly unfeminine (and yes, I'm aware that it's probably not a good thing to associate boobs and feminity; but it is how it is.) And also, while my measurements are 34-24-34, my lack of a chest makes me look like a pear-shape. Plus I can't shop for bras and I have to do it online (the people at VS told me to shop at Limited Too. I never went back.) And I also refuse to wear un-padded bras, and I have to wear chicken cutlet things every day. Also, I refuse to wear swimsuits unless I'm with really good friends. In addition to that, I'd only want B-cups, which is less than average (Average is 36C, but when Americans were skinner it was a 34 B, that's all that I'd want.)

      since feminists say they are champions for women's rights and fair treatment it would look pretty hypocritical if they judged your personal right to choose to have the operation

    Hello everyone. I am seriously considering breast augmentation but I am getting mixed reactions from friends and family. I have three children and have absolutely no plans to have anymore. Since having children I have gone from a D all the way down to a B. Naturally, it is not something that I am used to and would love to have my old shape back. Although a B does fit my small frame (5'2 115 lbs.) I am not insecure with any aspect of my life but I know I would feel a lot better if I did go through with it. Nothing drastic, I was thinking of a small C.

    A friend of mine had hers done and she is unbelievably happy. My main concern is health risks. Does anybody really know what the long term effects are?? Should I do it?? lol Any information or advice would be great.

      The same thing happened to me after I had 3 kids (after I nursed them). Sure, it would be nice to get the original ones back, but I don't think it's worth the health risks of having an operation, and having something inserted under the skin. However, I lifted weights for about a year (before an injury sidelined me), and I found that the bench press type exercises increased my pectoral muscles, which in turn, pushed my breasts out, making them seem bigger. So consider this alternative, or even easier, the newer, padded bras they have out now. What message are you sending your kids, if you have an OPERATION for something so superficial? Self-esteem shouldn't depend on our breast size. Also, ask your husband. Mine doesn't want me to risk my health for such a flimsy, vain reason.
